The 17th edition of the Asia Cup began on September 9 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with the final scheduled for September 28. Afghanistan faced Hong Kong in the tournament opener in Abu Dhabi. After nearly three weeks of intense cricket, India lifted the trophy for the ninth time, finishing the tournament unbeaten.
For the first time in history, the Asia Cup featured eight teams. Group A comprised India, Pakistan, UAE, and Oman, while Group B included Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Hong Kong, and Bangladesh. The 2025 edition was played in the T20 format, serving as preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
In the final match, Pakistan’s openers, Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman, put up a solid first-wicket partnership. Farhan scored 57 from 38 balls, while Zaman added 46. However, the Indian bowlers quickly took control. Varun Chakravarthy broke the partnership by dismissing Farhan, and other spinners followed suit. Kuldeep Yadav emerged as the star, claiming 4 wickets for 30 runs, while Chakravarthy, Axar Patel, and Jasprit Bumrah contributed two wickets each, restricting Pakistan to 146.
Chasing a modest target, India’s top order faltered early. Tilak Varma, however, anchored the innings, scoring an unbeaten 69 from 53 balls. He received crucial support from Sanju Samson (24) and Shivam Dube (33) to guide India to victory. With this win, India not only secured the Asia Cup title but also sent a strong message ahead of the T20 World Cup, showcasing depth in both batting and bowling.
