Australian pacer playing in the BBL suffers head injury

Another freakish accident happened on the cricket field ahead of yesterday’s Big Bash League (BBL) semi-final clash between the Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Stars. Australian pacer Joe Mennie who plays for the Sixers was hit on the head during the net session as the Sixers prepared for the game. Joe was bowling to teammate Michael Lumb when he was struck on the head by the ball. “After being struck on the head by a ball at training on Monday, Joe was transported to a hospital in Brisbane where he underwent a series of check-ups before being discharged later that evening. Joe was reviewed by a Cricket Australia doctor on Tuesday and had some scans performed that revealed a small fracture and associated minor brain bleed.” Cricket Australia’s (CA) Chief Medical Officer John Orchard said in a statement. He also added, “Whilst this is a serious injury, Joe is feeling well. We believe that this is a stable injury and will not require surgery.” Joe has suffered a fractured skull and there is an indication of some minor bleeding into the brain, but as per CA, the doctors have suggested that there is no real need for a surgery and that he has the best chances of recovering under observation. Former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Brad Haddin who is also a part of the Sixers team told Sky Sports Radio that for that moment he thought Joe, fortunately, escaped without being seriously hurt. “It was a bit of a scary incident actually,” Haddin said at the time. “He was bowling in the nets and Michael Lumb got hold of one straight back and he’s followed through and got him in the head. It was a bit uncomfortable for a couple of minutes but lucky Joe’s all right.
