Nothing seems to be going right for the Sylhet Sunrisers in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2022. Their key pacer Taskin Ahmed was ruled out of the tournament due to a back injury, they are placed at the bottom of the points table. And, lately, the Ravi Bopara-led side was docked five runs due to the fault of their own skipper during their league game against the Khulna Tigers on Monday.

The Sunrisers’ newly-appointed captain Bopara first made a tactical error by not giving a single over to the team’s leading wicket-taker Nazmul Islam and if that was not enough, he changed the condition of the ball which cost his team five precious runs. This supposedly also went on to be the turning point of the game as the Tigers went on to post a challenging total of 182/3 from their 20 overs.

During the ninth over of the first innings bowled by Ravi Bopara, replays showed that the former England all-rounder running his fingers over the ball and the on-field umpires intervened instantly. They then inspected the condition of the ball and while the captain was having a discussion with both umpires, they tried to explain the situation and at the same time also urged for the replacement balls to be brought.

Umpires can also strict action against Ravi Bopara

Clause 41.3.5 of the playing conditions states that “if it is possible to identify the player(s) responsible for changing the condition of the ball, the umpires shall. change the ball forthwith. Additionally, the bowler’s end umpire shall award 5 Penalty runs to the opposing side.”

Thus, the Sylhet Sunrisers were penalized for changing the condition of the ball. Meanwhile, the law also states that after awarding five runs to the opposition, the on-field umpires can also complain to the match referee who can take necessary action against the concerned player. Now, it remains to be seen whether Ravi Bopara will be fined or face any other action.

Coming back to the contest, the Sunrisers were restricted to 167/6 despite valiant knocks from Anamul Haque who scored a 33-ball 47 and an unbeaten 38 from Mosaddek. By the virtue of this 15-run win, the Khulna Tigers have now jumped to the third position in the BPL 2022 points table.
