Over the years, the Caribbean Premier League has grown in stature and has become one of the most fancied leagues in the world. The CPL 2017 is all set to get underway this year and the auction drafts for the upcoming edition were held on March 10. As many as 258 players went under the hammer across 14 rounds of bidding before the 6 franchises bagged their top preferences. Prior to the auctions, there were a few players that were retained by the franchises.

Pakistani veteran bowler Sohail Tanvir was retained by Guyana Amazon Warriors. St. Lucia franchise had retained hard-hitting South African batsman David Miller, while the Barbados Tridents kept the services of Kieran Pollard with themselves. The auctions began with the first top pick being Sri Lanka T20 specialist Lasith Malinga. Malinga was bought for $130000 by the St. Lucia side and the St. Kitts and Nevis roped in the services of Proteas all-rounder Chris Morris for the same price.

Lendl Simmons has been a known name in West Indies cricket and has handy T20 experience of IPL and CPL to his name. He was bought for a whopping $160000 by the Jamaica Tallawahs. St. Kitts and Nevis bagged Ben Cutting, the Australian pacer who hits the long ball. His batting prowess was at display in the IPL when he played for the Sunrisers Hyderabad last year.

Afghanistan players were a big delight at the IPL auctions this year. They continued to excel at the auctions of CPL 2017 as well. Mohammad Nabi will be playing for St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots. Leggie Rashid Khan, who was the biggest surprise of IPL 2017 auctions, was signed by Guyana Amazon Warriors.

The Jamaica Tallawahs retained Pakistani all-rounder Imad Wasim and also bought in another Pakistani player in the form of Mohammad Sami. The steal deal of the auctions was veteran West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels. Samuels was bought by the Guyana franchise for just $30000.

The big man from the Caribbean Islands, who had recently hit the social media with a bang, Rahkeem Cornwall fetched himself a deal with St. Lucia Stars for $10000. There were a few big names that missed out on the auctions as well.

English pacer Tymal Mills was perhaps the most surprising exclusion. Mills recently turned up for Quetta Gladiators in the PSL. He was also signed for a whopping second most expensive deal in IPL auctions this year. Among other big names who could not strike a deal in the CPL 2017 drafts are James Neesham, Corey Anderson and Vernon Philander.
