IPL 2023: Top five debutants to watch out for

Indian Premier League has witnessed many T20 stars from around the world step into the cricket field and make the marquee tournament their own. Certain players have set the IPL arena on fire in their debut season itself. For instance, Ben Stokes entered the T20 carnival in 2017 and left the world in awe with his majestic performances. As fans gear up for the 16th edition of the cash-rich league, there are certain IPL debutants who have the potential to shine. These cricketers have shown their might on the cricket field time and again and a lot of eyeballs will be glued on them in the forthcoming season of the T20 extravaganza. Here are the top five debutants to watch out for in IPL 2023 5. Mukesh Kumar Mukesh Kumar has been a proven performer in the Indian domestic circuit. First-class cricket has been his stronger suit where the 29-year-old has picked up 134 wickets in 35 matches at an average of 21.23. He has weaved his magic in the shortest format (T20) as well, taking 25 scalps in 23 matches at an economy of 7.20. Mukesh owned the 2021-22 season of the Ranji Trophy with his sensational performances. He bagged 20 wickets in five matches at an economy of 24.75. The Bengal pacer also showed his class in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022, picking up nine scalps in six games at an economy of 4.91. Courtesy of his consistent showings in the domestic arena, Mukesh broke into the Indian white-ball set-up. Delhi Capitals liked what they saw in the ace pacer and picked him at the IPL 2023 auction at a sum of INR 5.5 crore. The Gopalganj-born would be eager to make a mark in the 16th IPL edition with his bowling displays. 4. Joshua Little 2022 was the year of Joshua Little. He made the ball talk at the start of the innings and provided early breakthroughs to his side. The left-arm pacer was impeccable at the death too, troubling the batters with his variations. He featured in 26 T20Is last year and picked up 39 wickets at an economy of 7.58. Little was quite phenomenal at the T20 World Cup 2022. He was at Ireland's forefront of a historic win against the eventual T20 World champions England, picking up two crucial wickets. Also, the ace pacer took an exceptional hat trick against New Zealand. He ended the tournament with 11 scalps in seven games at an economy of 7.00. Little's stocks were on a meteoric rise leading up to the IPL 2023 auction and so, Gujarat Titans left no stone unturned to pick the Irish pacer at the marquee event. GT signed him for INR 4.4 crore. The 23-year-old would look to prove his mettle in the upcoming season of the cash-rich league. 3. Sikandar Raza Zimbabwe has produced many all-rounders but there has hardly been any of the caliber of Sikandar Raza. He has stamped his authority in the international arena and also the T20 franchise tournaments. The Sialkot-born has amassed 3123 runs in 160 T20 matches and bagged 83 wickets at an economy of 7.31. Raza took the T20 World Cup 2022 by storm with his spectacular performances. He knocked the wind out of top-quality bowling attacks and smashed 219 runs in eight games at a strike rate of 147.97. Also, the swashbuckling cricketer bamboozled batters with his variations and bagged 10 wickets at an economy of 6.50. Raza was in the form of his life and thus, Punjab Kings decided to invest in him for IPL 2023. PBKS signed the ace all-rounder for INR 50 lakh. The 36-year-old is an experienced campaigner and would look to bring his A-game into play in the 16th edition of the lucrative T20 tournament. 2. Harry Brook Harry Brook is known for his fearless style of cricket and has destroyed bowling line-ups for fun with his swashbuckling stroke play. The 23-year-old has featured in 99 T20 matches and plundered 2432 runs at a superb strike rate of 148.38. Brook has also displayed his batting might in the international arena. He has scored 372 runs in 20 T20Is at a strike rate of 137.77. The England batter was magnificent in the Test series against Pakistan, notching up 468 runs in three matches at a brilliant average of 93.60. Brook’s inclusion adds firepower to any batting line-up and therefore, Sunrisers Hyderabad went hammer and tongs to add him to their arsenal. Eventually, they signed the Yorkshire-born for a whopping sum of INR 13.25 crore. Harry would be itching to put up a show with the bat in his debut IPL season. 1. Cameron Green Cameron Green has set the international arena ablaze with his all-round performances. Test cricket has been his happy hunting ground where he has scored 806 runs in 18 matches at an average of 35.04 and picked up 23 wickets at an average of 29.78. When it comes to T20Is, the 23-year-old has hammered 139 runs in eight games at a stunning strike rate of 173.75 and bagged five wickets in those outings. Green has shown his ability to bat at the top order and also the middle order, thereby giving versatility to the batting line-up. On the bowling front, the right-arm pacer has troubled batters with the bounce he extracts from the surface and provided timely breakthroughs to Australia. A player of Green’s caliber is an asset to any side and so, Mumbai Indians broke their bank to sign the ace all-rounder at the 2023 player auction. The five-time IPL champions splurged an insane sum of INR 17.5 crore to acquire his services. It will be interesting to see if Cameron is able to justify his price tag in the upcoming season.
