The hapless Mumbai Indians (MI) are all set to host the formidable Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Match 55 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Having lost eight of their 11 matches so far, MI are currently at the bottom of the points table and are almost out of the playoff race. SRH, on the other hand, have won six of their 10 games and are fourth in the standings, putting them in strong contention for the knockout stage.

This is the second time this season that the two teams are facing each other and cricket fans will not forget their previous encounter. Records were tumbled in Hyderabad as SRH posted 272 runs on the board – the then-highest-ever IPL total – and MI fought hard to chase it down but fell short by just 31 runs.

SRH have been pulling off similar batting heroics throughout the series, while MI have continued to underperform. Notably, SRH are coming on the back of a thrilling 1-run win over table-toppers Rajasthan Royals, while MI enter after a 24-run loss to Kolkata Knight Riders. The five-time champions will be hoping for a positive result when SRH visit their home turf, the Wankhede Stadium, on Monday (May 6).

Here's the probable Playing XI for MI versus SRH IPL 2024 clash:

Openers: Ishan Kishan (wk), Rohit Sharma

Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma have had a great start to their campaign, often giving the team a blazing start in the powerplay. However, as the tournament progressed, both lost their sharpness in attack, especially Rohit Sharma. The former MI captain has struggled in the last few matches as he has been dismissed for cheap scores.

Meanwhile, Kishan was able to get off to a strong start in most of the matches but failed to capitalize on it. However, the last time MI took on SRH, the two made a powerful start to help their team get closer to the mammoth total.

Middle-order: Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Nehal Wadhera, Tim David

Suryakumar Yadav has had an inconsistent run so far this series, one of the main reasons why MI have struggled to get going. He is considered one of the most reliable batters for MI in the middle order, but this time he did not live up to expectations. Tilak Varma is the leading run-scorer for MI in IPL 2024 with 347 runs. The youngster has been a consistent performer and a major force in MI's middle order.

Nehal Wadhera has played some good knocks in the limited opportunities he has had this season. The left-hander brings stability to the middle order and helps them to reach a competitive total. Tim David often bats in the lower-middle order and plays a finishing role. In the previous match against SRH, the Australian big-hitter had scored 42 off just 22 balls.

All-rounder: Hardik Pandya (c), Mohammad Nabi

Hardik Pandya is going through a tough time in his comeback season with the Mumbai franchise. His team is currently at the bottom of the table and there has been no significant contribution from his side in either department to lift them up. Notably, his slow knock of 20 off 24 balls was partly the reason why MI were unable to chase down the target of 278 against SRH.

Muhammad Nabi is an experienced campaigner, but his expertise has not been of much use to the struggling MI so far. The Afghanistan cricketer has picked up just one wicket in his last three outings and has not contributed much with the bat as well.

Bowlers: Gerald Coetzee, Piyush Chawla, Jasprit Bumrah

Veteran India spinner Piyush Chawla will lead the spin attack for MI. Chawla recently surpassed Dwayne Bravo's tally of 183 wickets, to become the second-highest wicket-taker of all-time in IPL history. He took a wicket at an economy of just 5.00 in the last match against KKR and will aim to continue his form in the upcoming match as well.

MI's key strength is their pace attack and their spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is in top form, not surprisingly. With 17 wickets from 11 matches, the right-arm pacer is currently the leading wicket-taker in the series. Bumrah had gone for an economy of just 9.00 when SRH batters made a mockery of the bowlers in their previous encounter. Gerald Coetzee is also in decent form but needs to control the run flow. Both will also have the assistance of Sri Lankan pacer Nuwan Thushara, who joins as an Impact Player.
