T20 World Cup 2022: Rating Performances of Super 12 teams in Week 1

The Super 12 phase of the T20 World Cup 2022 finally got underway on Saturday (October 22). Although the rain gods have not been kind enough, there have been many close matches which have kept the fans on the tenterhooks. The arch-rivals India and Pakistan were involved in a tight-knit contest, which involved the fans until the last ball. The Week 1 of the showpiece event concluded with both matches being washed out due to rain. The top teams in each group are now gearing up for the most important matches of the tournament. Here’s the- Rating of each team on the basis of the performances in the first week 12. Netherlands- 5 The Netherlands team entered into the Super 12 with two wins in three league matches and looked spirited with their performances. However, they lost both their league matches in Week 1, and are nearly out of contention for the semi-finals. In the first game against Bangladesh, the Dutch team did well in the bowling unit to restrict the opposition to 144 with proficient bowling performances. In reply, the Scott Edwards-led side fell short by nine runs. The second game witnessed them clashing against India, wherein they started well with the ball but went on to concede 179. Then, they could not cope up to the pressure of a big score and could only score 123 in their designated quota of 20 overs. 11. Bangladesh- 5.5 Ahead of this tournament, Bangladesh endured a slump in form wherein they went winless in all four matches of the T20I Tri-series. They have been average with their performances in this ICC event, with a solitary victory in two appearances. In the first game against the Netherlands, they could post only 144 on the board, with most of the batters still looking rusty. However, they prevailed by nine runs in the second half of the game with impressive performances from bowlers. The Shakib Al Hasan-led side then clashed against South Africa and conceded 205 on the board, with ordinary performances from the bowling unit. In reply, they were bundled out for a score of 101, with the batters playing irresponsible cricket. 10. Pakistan- 6 The Pakistan team headed into the tournament with a T20 Tri-series victory in New Zealand and were in a good frame of mind. However, they could not hold their composure during crunch moments and are on the verge of elimination from the tournament. In the first outing against arch-rivals India, they had a bad start, but somehow posted a competitive score of 159 on the board. They kept things tight until the 17th over, but let the match slip in the last three overs with Virat Kohli unleashing his best performances in the T20Is. The second game saw them facing Zimbabwe in a must-win game. Although the Babar Azam-led side gave away too many runs in the powerplay, they pulled back and restricted Zimbabwe to 130. However, they again failed to ace crucial moments with the willow, which resulted in them losing this game as well. 9. Afghanistan-7 The Afghan team had a decent outing in the Asia Cup 2022, wherein they produced a good fight. They are placed alongside the top T20I teams in their group and were expected to deliver their best in this tournament. In the first game against England, they could put only 112 runs on the board owing to their limited match practice. Then, they bowled their heart out to put pressure on the English team, but the opposition managed to chase down the target with 11 balls to spare. Unfortunately, their second and third games against New Zealand and Ireland respectively have been washed out. It will be interesting to see if they can produce strong performances in the coming week. 8. England- 7 The English team secured a T20I series victory against Pakistan and Australia, ahead of the T20 World Cup. However, they have looked average in their performances in the tournament, and need to come up with improved showing. The first game against Afghanistan witnessed them restricting Afghanistan to 112 which was a good effort from the bowling unit. In reply, the Jos Buttler-led side took more than 18 overs to chase down the score. In the second game, they sustained a loss against Ireland, wherein they lost by five runs, which was a big setback to their semi-final hopes. The third game of the Three Lions against Australia ended as a washout. 7. Australia- 7 The Australian team procured mixed results ahead of the tournament, wherein they lost to India and England while winning against Zimbabwe in the T20I series. Being a host nation, a lot of hopes have been pinned upon them by the cricket fraternity. In the first fixture, they faced their Trans-Transman rivals New Zealand. The Aaron Finch-led side conceded 200 due to an ordinary bowling performance. In response, they were bundled out for 111, which was a big dent in their confidence. However, they stayed alive in the tournament by securing a victory against Sri Lanka. They shared points with England after the rain washed out the game. 6. Sri Lanka- 7.5 Sri Lanka were full of confidence ahead of the tournament with Asia Cup 2022 win. They tasted success on two out of three occasions to reach the Super 12. However, things have been a little ordinary for them, with a single victory in two matches. In their first outing against Ireland, Lankans were clinical to restrict Ireland to a total of 128 with an impressive bowling performance. In reply, they sealed the chase with a loss of one wicket and five overs to spare. The second game witnessed them losing to Australia in a dramatic fashion, as they could score only 157 and then failed to defend the score. It will be interesting to see their progress in the tournament. 5. Ireland- 7.5 The Irish team secured two wins in three league matches in the preliminary round to reach Super 12. They have done well so far in this round and also possess the chance of reaching the semi-finals. In their first league game against Sri Lanka, the Andrew Balbirnie-led side could score only 128 and then could not defend the score. In a must-win game against England, they displayed an aggressive intent, which surely reaped rewards. Although they scored 157, they had a strong start in the first 10 overs, which helped them to seal the game by five runs, when the rain affected the game. Their third league fixture against Afghanistan ended as a washout. 4. Zimbabwe- 7.5 The Zimbabwean team have always been in high spirits at ICC events. They topped their group table in the first round with two wins in three matches to enter the Super 12. Their first game against South Africa witnessed them doing well with the bat while being ordinary with the ball. Fortunately, the rain arrived which resulted in them sharing points with Proteas. In the second game against Pakistan, they started well with the bat but lost midway to finish on 130. However, they were proficient with their bowling unit to register a nerve-wracking victory by one run and are surely on the right track for the semi-finals. 3. South Africa- 8 The experienced South African team came into this tournament with a loss to India in the T20I series. However, much was expected from them due to their quality batting department and strong bowling unit. They were impressive with their performance against Zimbabwe in their first match, especially with the bat. However, the rain gods hampered their hopes of starting on a winning note, as they shared points. In the latest outing, Proteas came up with a proper plan and posted a mammoth score of 205 on the board. Then, the bowling performances complimented well to help them secure a sensational win by 104 runs, which has helped them in terms of NRR. 2. New Zealand- 9 One of the most consistent teams across all formats, New Zealand, have developed their set combinations for every situation/condition. The hard work and team combination have certainly helped them to start well in the tournament. In the first game against Australia, they posted a total of 200, with terrific performances from their batters. Then, the bowlers run rampant to stun the hosts’ batting lineup and won by 89 runs. Their second league game against Afghanistan was a washout. However, the Kane Willamson-led side are currently at the pole position with a superb net run rate. 1. India- 9.5 The Indian team prevailed over Australia and South Africa on home soil, and were coming into this tournament with confidence under their belt. With two wins in as many appearances, they are the best-performing team in the Super 12. In the first game against Pakistan, the bowlers did well to put the opposition under pressure and restricted them to 159. In reply, the batting unit led by Virat Kohli saw them winning the game on the last ball in a cliff-hanger. In the latest outing against the Netherlands, the Men in Blue posted 179 on the board. Then, the bowlers backed up well to restrict the Dutch team to 123 and win by 56 runs. Another win would confirm their semi-final spot.
