Legendary opener, Sunil Gavaskar’s innings of 221 at The Oval in 1979 against England was the first time an Indian batter had scored a double century on English soil, and it came while chasing a record target of 438 runs in the fourth innings. Gavaskar opened the innings with Chetan Chauhan, and the pair put on a solid 213-run stand. While Chauhan played the supporting role with an 80, Gavaskar went on to make a historic double ton.

The right-handed batter batted for more than eight hours, facing 443 balls and hitting 21 boundaries. By tea on the final day, India were 304 for 1, and had good chances for a win. Gavaskar eventually fell for 221, caught by David Gower off Ian Botham. His dismissal triggered a collapse, and India, despite being so close, finished on 429/8. The match ended in a draw with nine runs needed off the last ball.
