Delhi Capitals (DC) finished fifth in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, narrowly missing out on a playoffs' berth but showing signs of progress under a settled core. Ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction, the franchise largely chose continuity, retaining most of their key players and making only a few changes to the squad. One of their notable acquisitions was Prithvi Shaw, who was picked up for INR 75 lakh.

While the Maharashtra cricketer's talent is unquestionable, his recent inconsistency and DC’s already crowded top-order raise questions about the move. The franchise could arguably have targeted players who better addressed their squad balance. In this feature, CricTracker analyses three such players that the Delhi-based side could have picked over the right-handed opening batter.

Here are 3 players DC could have bought over Prithvi Shaw

Sarfaraz Khan could have been a more suitable option for DC, particularly given their need for stability in the middle order. One of the most consistent performers in domestic cricket, Sarfaraz has earned a reputation for scoring quickly while also anchoring an innings when required. His ability to handle both spin and pace makes him a valuable asset in the middle overs.

Sarfaraz has featured in the IPL for three teams and has accumulated 585 runs in 37 innings. Interestingly, his last IPL appearance came in 2023 for Delhi Capitals themselves. With DC already boasting multiple opening options, Sarfaraz’s inclusion could have strengthened the middle order rather than adding another opener, potentially making the batting unit more balanced.
