IPL 2023: Top 5 bowling performances from fifth week

An exciting week of IPL 2023 came to an end where plenty of runs were scored and wicket were taken in tandem. Some of performances ended up in losing causes, but they must be appreciated. In a game of small margins, bowlers do not get good figures often. But this week had some four-wicket hauls and even in a match where teams scored over 200 runs, the bowlers were successful in pulling things back. The likes of Piyush Chawla, Varun Chakravarthy and Josh Little have continued their superb form in this week, but there were some performers who fared better than them. On that note, here are top five bowling performances from Week 5 of IPL 2023: 5. Moeen Ali 2/13 vs LSG Moeen Ali has not had a great IPL till now as he has neither scored big nor taken wickets regularly except for Chennai Super Kings' second match. However, CSK's washed-out game against LSG saw one of the best bowling performances as Moeen was brought on inside the Powerplay and he got dangerous Kyle Mayers out. He was giving the ball flight and getting the purchase off the surface. He maintained fuller lengths outside off and in his third over, he got Karan Sharma caught and bowled, leaving LSG 44/5. When Moeen came to finish his spell, Ayush Badoni and Nicholas Pooran were just seeing him off, taking no risk. MS Dhoni utilised him inside the first 12 overs and the spinner took advantage of a slow track as he not only denied LSG a single boundary off his bowling, but bowled 11 dots. The match was washed out but Moeen would be happy to get back taking wickets and contributing for CSK. 4. Josh Hazlewood 2/15 vs LSG One of the most controversial matches of the IPL saw Josh Hazlewood coming back to competitive cricket after four long months. He was nursing an injury, but appeared for Royal Challengers Bangalore at the right time against LSG. Defending a mere target of 126 at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, he started off nicely. He got struggling Ayush Badoni out in the fifth over, leaving Lucknow Supergiants in danger. Although, his countryman Marcus Stoinis hit him for a six, he relied more on bowling back off lengths and kept backing himself. He came to bowl an all-important penultimate over. Though, Naveen ul Haq got a boundary in a bizarre manner, it was still an economical over. He nailed the last pin in the coffin by getting Naveen out. It took a lot for Hazlewood to produce such a match-winning effort after this long break. 3) Yash Thakur 4/37 vs PBKS In a game where 458 runs were scored, Yash Thakur returned with figures of 4/37. Playing only his third IPL game, the right-arm fast-medium pacer showed courage on the field. He had only one IPL wicket before this game, and in this context, he would be delighted with his performance. Yash got the dangerous Sikandar Raza in the 12th over, keeping the contest tight. He bowled his last two overs in the death. Though, the game was almost gone from Punjab Kings' hands, it was still not over. Jitesh Sharma launched two sixes in style but later he fell to Yash's trap. In the last ball of the eighteenth over, he got Rahul Chahar out. Later, he got Shahrukh Khan caught by Ravi Bishnoi to finish off the innings. He kept things simple, and hit the right lengths. Yash looks to be a promising pacer, but only time will tell how many skills he possesses. 2) Mitchell Marsh 4/27 vs SRH Mitchell Marsh delivered his best all-round performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He had a blast with the ball, taking four wickets for 27 runs. First came to bowl inside powerplay, Marsh dismissed Rahul Tripathi. He was recalled to break the partnership between Abhishek Sharma and Aiden Markram and the all-rounder not only bluffed Markram with a slower one, but also got the million-dollar Harry Brook for a duck. His double-wicket maiden over brought Delhi Capitals back into the contest. He bowled the 17th over and got better off Abdul Samad. Although, he got smashed in his last over, he was still was the pick of the bowlers. The performance would boost Marsh's confidence as he was struggling to find his rhythm earlier. Although, the match result did not go to his side, he was awarded the Player of the Match for his 4/27 and 63 off 39. 1) Mohammed Shami 4/11 vs DC Mohammed Shami's delightful new-ball spell almost snatched the game for Gujarat Titans against Delhi Capitals. Known for his new-ball exploits, Shami was at his best from the very first ball, dismissing opener Phil Salt. He got Rilee Rossouw out off an outside edge and then dismissed Manish Pandey in a similar fashion, with Wriddhiman Saha doing the rest. Priyam Garg was the last one to join as it was more like Shami bowling, Saha catching situation. In his last over, Axar punched him down for the only boundary off his spell. During that match, Shami bowled 19 dot balls, most this season in an innings, surpassing Trent Boult's 18. His seam position was right up and Hardik made him bowl four straight overs. Although, his side lost the close contest, he was awarded the Player of the Match. Shami looks in superb form with the new ball, which is a positive sign for his team going forward in the tournament.
