IPL 2025: What were the major records broken during tournament's 18th edition

Another intriguing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) concluded on Tuesday, June 3, as Punjab Kings (PBKS) lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by six runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad in the final. While some teams played fantastic cricket throughout the season, others will have to go back to the drawing board and devise better plans for next season. Some record-shattering performances in the season will be etched in the hearts of cricket enthusiasts for a very long time. Let's look at the major records broken during Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025: 6. Sai Sudharsan becomes youngest batter to score 700-plus season runs Sai-Sudharsan. The Gujarat Titans (GT) opener amassed 759 runs from 15 innings at an average of 54.21 and a strike rate of 156.18. The Tamil Nadu-born registered six half-centuries during the season and also notched up his second IPL century, scoring an unbeaten 108 off 61 balls against Delhi Capitals on May 18. Sudharsan became the youngest player to score 700-plus runs in a single edition of the IPL. He got to the 700-run landmark at the age of 23 years and 227 days. He surpassed his captain Shubman Gill's record of scoring 700-plus runs at the age of 23 years and 257 days, who achieved the feat in a dream 2023 season. 5. RCB become first team to win all seven away games RCB 2025 (Source : Twitter) Royal Challengers Bengaluru became the first team in IPL history to win all away matches in a season. The six-wicket win against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the BRSABV Ekana Stadium on May 27 helped RCB break the magnificent record. Virat Kohli also scripted history in this game as he surpassed David Warner's tally for the most half-centuries in the IPL. While Warner scored 62 half-centuries in 184 matches, Kohli notched up his 63rd fifty in his 264th clash. 4. Lowest total successfully defended in IPL history Punjab-Kings. (Photo source: IPL) Punjab Kings stunned the cricket fraternity by successfully defending the lowest total in IPL history against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh on April 15. In the first innings, PBKS were bowled out for just 111 in 15.3 overs on a sluggish surface. However, in reply, KKR could only manage 95 before getting bowled out in 15.1 overs. Yuzvendra Chahal starred with the ball, bagging a four-for. The Knights were comfortably placed at 62/2 in the eighth over. However, the batting lineup completely fell flat. 116 was the previous lowest total successfully defended in the IPL. Chennai Super Kings defended the score against then-Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2009. 3. Krunal Pandya becomes first player to win two POTM awards in IPL finals Ravi Shastri and Krunal Pandya. In the IPL 2017 final, he scored a crucial 47 off 38 balls and bowled a decent spell, conceding 31 runs in his four overs, to help Mumbai Indians beat Rising Pune Supergiant by just 1 run. In the IPL 2025 final, Krunal couldn't make much of an impact, getting dismissed for a five-ball four. However, he bowled a phenomenal spell, picking up the important wickets of Prabhsimran Singh and Josh Inglis, and finished with figures of 2/17 in four overs. He won the Player of the Match award in both these games, contributing for the sides when it mattered the most. 2. Vaibhav Suryavanshi becomes youngest debutant, youngest centurion in IPL history Vaibhav-Suryavanshi. (Photo source: X) Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest player to be listed at the IPL auction at the age of 13. He was roped in by Rajasthan Royals for INR 1.10 crore. He made his debut against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 19 at the age of 14 years and 23 days. The Bihar batter surpassed Prayas Ray Barman, who made his IPL debut at the age of 16 years and 257 days for RCB. Suryavanshi scored his maiden IPL century at the age of 14 years and 32 days. He became the youngest centurion in IPL history. Before him, Manish Pandey held the record for the youngest century at the age of 19 years and 235 days during IPL 2009. The Samastipur-born also won the award for highest strike-rate for the season, making it a truly memorable debut for the youngster. 1. Longest wait to win an IPL title Shreyas-Iyer-and-Rajat-Patidar. (Photo source: IPL) RCB finally managed to end their excruciating wait for an IPL title. They defeated PBKS by six runs in a humdinger of a final to become the eighth team to win the IPL. RCB had to wait for 18 seasons to lift their maiden IPL title. Mumbai Indians held the record for waiting the longest to win a maiden IPL title. Now, Rajat Patidar-led RCB have toppled that record by playing some remarkable cricket throughout the campaign, showing grit and determination all the way.
