'Batted like Don Bradman' - Shubman Gill gets massive applaud by Ravi Shastri for Edgbaston heroics
“The best by a captain, 10 out of 10. You can't ask for anything more from a captain,” Shastri expressed his thoughts for Gill.
Ace batter and India captain Shubman Gill has received massive applaud by former cricketer Ravi Shastri for his brilliant knock against England in the second Test of the ongoing series at Edbaston. Shastri compared Gill's batting to the likes of legendary Sir Donald Bradman, and said that his important knocks in both the innings helped India win the Test match and level the series 1-1 against the Three Lions.
Shastri believes the 269 and 161 by the India skipper were important for the latter to display his prowess in front of the world, followed by his captaincy to bowl England out. He also lauded Gill for picking the likes of Akash Deep in Jasprit Bumrah's unavailability, who he feels might be troubling a lot of English batters as the series moves further.
“The best by a captain, 10 out of 10. You can't ask for anything more from a captain. You're one-down in the series. You come out there and you bat like Bradman. 269 and 161, and you end up winning the game,” Shastri said on air via Sky Sports Cricket.
“Your captaincy was very reactive in the first test match. You almost followed the ball. You're very proactive in the next game. You might have just unearthed the best seamer for English conditions in this Indian line-up by picking Akash Deep, who will trouble England as this series progresses,” Shastri added after India's win in the second Test in Birmingham.
Gill has undoubtedly been India's best batter so far in the series. He started the first Test with a 147 in the first innings, but his side lost the game by five wickets on the final day. However, he came back stronger to ensure a match-winning knock in the second Test, and became the first-ever batter to register a 200-plus and a 150-plus total in the same match.
He will now be leading his troops into the third Test, which is set to begin on July 10 at the historic venue - Lord's. This will be the first encounter for Gill at the venue as a captain, and he will aim to make it a memorable by not only winning the game, but also getting his name on the Honours Board by scoring yet another triple-digit score to go with in the series.
