CSA director confirms plans to integrate ‘Baby AB’ into international cricket

Brevis' ability to hit big shots and the temperament to hold the ground in tough situations makes him a valuable team player.

South Africa's latest batting prodigy, Dewald Brevis is making his case stronger for national selection with every other outing of his and hence, the talks of him being integrated into the senior men's set-up are mounting. Cognizant to the same, Cricket South Africa director Enoch Nkwe has mentioned that the board has a plan in place for his inclusion into the national side.

Ever since bursting onto the scene in the U19 World Cup 2022, Brevis hasn’t looked back. He has been scoring runs for fun, and has also been selected for many top franchises in T20 cricket around the world. His ability to hit big shots and the temperament to hold the ground in tough situations makes him a valuable team player as well. 

Nkwe, the CSA director during a press conference at the CSA headquarters recently said that, “There’s a lot of noise around Brevis, we know how good he is, he has shown it now in the SA20, he has played some good cricket and has been consistent especially when it comes to T20 cricket.”

He added that, “In terms of these youngsters, the reality moving forward, we might have to have to do the David Warner approach, where there’s going to be the transition phases from the U19  into professional. It might be through T20 cricket, then ODI and then Test cricket, that’s something that we foresee happening in the future.”

Brevis is nicknamed “Baby AB” and there is a reason for the same. The name was given to him because of his incredible playing style and flamboyant stroke play. He is a top prospect and there is a lot of similarity between him and South African cricketing icon AB de Villiers. Even the South African great has praised some of the incredible batting performances of Brevis, which shows the potential he has.

Brevis is currently playing in the inaugural edition of the SA20 for MI Cape Town and has displayed his calibre already. He needs to play really for MI Cape Town to make it to the semi finals of the ongoing tournament. His team currently sits at the top after four games with nine points having won two games and lost the other two at a net run rate of 0.388 accumulating nine points to their tally.
