Shubman Gill has upped his red-ball game after being appointed as India's Test captain. His first assignment as India's red-ball skipper is the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, where he has amassed 585 runs from four innings at a mind-boggling average of 146.25.

Shubman's Test average ahead of the tour was a shade above 35. Two Tests into the tour of England, his Test average has soared to 42.72 and he has added three centuries, including a maiden double ton in the first innings of the Edgbaston Test. In this encounter, he became the first batter in Test history to score a double century and a 150 in the same match.

Yuvraj Singh, who has been like an elder brother-cum-mentor to Shubman and seen his progress from close quarters, couldn't choose whether his batting or his captaincy on the England tour has been more impressive. The former India all-rounder mentioned Shubman as being the best performer of the team, leading the Asian giants from the front.

"I think both his batting and captaincy are impressive. He's really taken on the responsibility. Test captaincy is a tough job, and the kind of performance he has given as a Test captain - that's exactly what being a Test captain means. He's been the best performer in the team, and he has proven it through his leadership," Yuvraj told India Today.

Yuvraj also praised BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar and India's head coach Gautam Gambhir for showing faith in Shubman and giving him the prestigious responsibility of leading the team in the longest format of the game.

"I'm sure Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar also deserve credit for building this team and entrusting him with that responsibility. And I think going forward, I hope India wins this Test series," he added.

England won the first Test by five wickets at Headingley before India bounced back with a 336-run victory at Edgbaston. The third Test commences on Thursday, July 10, at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground in London.
