Hampshire onboards Russell Domingo as head coach ahead of new season
Domingo will replace Adrian Birrell from the position.
Hampshire County Cricket Club has made a change to its existing coaching set-up as Russell Domingo has been welcomed as the new head coach for the side. He will be succeeding the likes of Adrian Birrell, also a former South Africa domestic cricketer, who had spent seven seasons with the side as the head coach.
Notably, Domingo has been brought into the set-up with a contract for a couple of years. Speaking of his experience, the 51-year-old has been involved with international teams like South Africa and Bangladesh in the past. He joins Hampshire with a hope to get them past the finishing line, after the side ended as runners-up in the T20 Blast as well as the One-Day Cup in the previous season.
"I'm thrilled to be joining Hampshire Cricket. This is a club with incredible history, outstanding facilities at Utilita Bowl, and a clear vision for success both on and off the field. I've been genuinely impressed by the ambition here and the strong cultural values that underpin everything Hampshire does. The combination of developing young talent whilst competing for trophies is exactly the challenge I'm looking for, and I can't wait to get started," Domingo was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
Meanwhile, the county club has also onboarded Jimmy Adams as their assistant coach, whereas Shane Burger will be the assistant bowling coach for Hampshire. Domingo has expressed his excitement to be working alongside the duo and being a forming part of a significant coaching set-up for the next couple of years.
"I'm looking forward to working alongside Jimmy and Shane and getting to know the players as we prepare for what promises to be an exciting season ahead," he said.
Hampshire's director of cricket, Giles White, has also expressed his delight upon the onboarding of a fresh coaching set-up ahead of the new season coming ahead. He has also shared the feeling of being confident that the team will continue to build on their habit of winning and the upcoming season will also be providing the players with a chance to showcase the same, but with a new coaching staff.
"Together, they form a strong and experienced unit that will continue to champion the cultural framework that has underpinned Hampshire cricket over the years. We exist to win and to develop, and I'm confident this team will continue to drive that ethos as we move into an exciting future. It's a fantastic place to be at this moment in time, and the season ahead promises great opportunities," White said.
