'He didn't have any ego' - Sunil Gavaskar praises Rajat Patidar's leadership after RCB's maiden IPL title win

Sunil Gavaskar praised Rajat Patidar and claimed his captaincy to be impressive following Royal Challengers Bengaluru's maiden title win as they beat Punjab Kings by six runs in IPL 2025 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on June 3.

The former Indian cricketer was in awe of Patidar's leadership qualities. Gavaskar noted that the a captain could easily have doubts in their minds when they lead a team with including several superstars. However, he lauded Patidar to be different from others in this regard, as he got support from seniors in the team and ensured they all contributed for the team's cause.

"His captaincy has been extremely impressive. At times, you have slight hesitation in your mind when you have so many superstar players in your team, as to whether you will be able to manage them. However, the way he has developed this team and gotten the support from the superstars, you come to know that he has leadership qualities," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

The former Indian skipper added that Patidar did not have any ego and approached all players and sought their inputs. Gavaskar added that the star player did what was necessary for the team by discussing crucial things with the senior players in the team.

"He didn't have any ego. He was going to the senior players and discussing with them what needed to be done. It was evident from the way he was asking that he didn't have any ego. A captain should never have any ego. He has to be doing what is good for the team, and he did exactly that," the former India opener added.

Patidar became the first RCB skipper to win the IPL title. Previous skippers who ensured RCB was in the final were Anil Kumble, Daniel Vettori, and Virat Kohli, all of whom were well established at the highest level.
