Stephen Fleming, who took charge of England's Test side following Brendon McCullum's departure, has approached Michael Hussey to join the coaching staff as batting coach. Hussey, who scored 6,235 runs across 79 Tests for Australia, is currently coaching Welsh Fire in The Hundred and serves as batting coach at Chennai Super Kings. Fleming and Hussey share a professional relationship spanning over 15 years, having first worked together at CSK in the IPL's inaugural season in 2008.

No formal contract has been offered by the England and Wales Cricket Board yet, though Hussey remains Fleming's primary choice for the role.

Hussey was England's batting consultant when the team won the T20 World Cup in 2022, bringing relevant experience in international coaching environments. England will host Australia in the Ashes series next June, with the team aiming to reclaim the trophy for the first time since 2015.

"There is a lot of different things to consider. My short answer is I would not say no to anything really," Hussey was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

Hussey's openness to the coaching opportunity

Hussey's willingness to explore the opportunity reflects his broader approach to coaching across different cricket nations. The Australian has demonstrated a commitment to developing players regardless of their national affiliation, having worked with multiple international teams and franchise sides. His experience at CSK under Fleming's leadership has strengthened their working relationship and mutual understanding of modern cricket coaching.

"I love the coaching side of the game. I love trying to help players get better whether they are Australians, English, South Africans, Pakistan ?or India or anywhere, it does not bother me," Hussey continued.

The complexity of coaching England against Australia

The prospect of coaching England against Australia in an Ashes series presents a unique challenge for Hussey, given his playing history with the Australian team. The Ashes remains one of cricket's most intense rivalries, and taking a coaching role with England would place him in an unusual position relative to his former nation. Hussey acknowledged the emotional complexity of such a move while remaining pragmatic about professional responsibilities.

"It would feel a bit weird – definitely – coaching for England against Australia in an Ashes series, no question," Hussey added.

Family and professional considerations

Hussey emphasised that any decision regarding the England role would not be rushed, citing multiple personal and professional considerations. His close relationship with Fleming carries significant weight in his thinking, alongside the practical demands of international coaching commitments. Family considerations remain a central factor in his deliberations about taking on such a demanding position.

"I won't be rushing into a decision. I have a very close relationship with Stephen Fleming and that has an impact on it as well. The time away from family is a real thing for me. I am not in a position to say yay or nay any time soon," Hussey noted.

Fleming's appointment as England Test coach reflects the ECB's confidence in his tactical acumen and ability to rebuild the team's Test credentials. Hussey's assessment of Fleming underscores the respect between the two coaches and their shared philosophy on player development and team dynamics.

"He has a very good understanding of the game. Very shrewd operator who gets that balance between enjoyment and fun and relationships," Hussey concluded.
