IND W vs AUS W 2025: Australia fined for slow over-rate in second ODI against India
Australia were ruled to be two overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.
Australia Women have been fined 10 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate in the second ODI against India at New Chandigarh on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. The sanction came after Australia fell short by two overs of the required target, even after allowances were considered.
The charge was laid by on-field umpires Vrinda Rathi and Janani Narayanan, third umpire Lauren Agenbag, and fourth umpire Gayathri Venugopalan. Match referee G.S. Lakshmi of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees imposed the fine in accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with minimum over-rate offences.
Under this regulation, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side falls short. Australian skipper Alyssa Healy accepted the sanction, pleading guilty to the offence, which meant no formal hearing was required.
INDW v AUSW 2025, 2nd ODI: Records tumble as Mandhana shines
The slow over-rate fine added to Australia’s woes in what turned out to be a historic defeat as India Women thrashed the visitors by 102 runs, inflicting Australia’s heaviest defeat in terms of runs in Women’s ODI history. The previous record was a 92-run loss against England in the 1973 Women’s Cricket World Cup.
India’s batting star Smriti Mandhana was the star of the day, producing a breathtaking innings of 117 runs from just 91 balls. Her knock featured 14 boundaries and four sixes, setting the tone for India’s commanding total. Mandhana’s aggressive approach put Australia under immense pressure and earned her the Player of the Match award.
Supporting Mandhana’s brilliance, bowler Kranti Gaud continued her impressive rise in international cricket. Having made her ODI debut earlier this year, Gaud picked up three crucial wickets for just 28 runs as her disciplined spell dismantled Australia’s middle order, ensuring India’s dominance throughout the game.
While India celebrated one of their most memorable ODI victories, the result leaves Australia needing to regroup quickly. After winning the first match of the three-game series by eight wickets, Australia's loss in the second game means that the series is now level at 1-1 heading into the decider. The third and final encounter of the series will be played in Delhi on September 20.
