Punjab Kings (PBKS) started their campaign in IPL 2024 with a four-wicket win over Delhi Capitals (DC) on Saturday, March 23 at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur, Chandigarh. After being put in to bat first, DC posted a decent score of 174/9 in their allotted 20 overs with solid contributions from Shai Hope (33 off 25) and Abhishek Porel 32* (10). 

In reply, Punjab chased down the target in 19.2 overs courtesy of brilliant knocks from Sam Curran (63 off 47) and Liam Livingstone (38* off 21). As a result, the Shikhar Dhawan-led side gained crucial two points at the start of the season.

1. David Warner plays mind boggling shot off Kagiso Rabada

After being put in to bat first, Delhi openers David Warner (29 off 21) and Mitchell Marsh (20 off 12) got their team off to a quick start adding 39 runs off 20 balls. During their partnership, Dhawan played an extraordinary shot against Kagiso Rabada as he made room for himself on the on-side and smacked the ball over fine leg for a maximum.

2. Shashank Singh takes a stunner at long off to dismiss Tristan Stubbs

Stubbs walked into bat with Delhi reeling at 111/5 after 13.2 overs and was trying to get set at the crease. However, he failed to get going in his innings and lofted Rahul Chahar in the air towards long off. However, Shashank Singh managed to cover good ground running on his left and took a breathtaking diving catch to dismiss the South African batter.

3. Ishan Porel rescues Delhi’s innings with an impactful knock

The southpaw was brought into the XI as an impact player for Delhi to add some crucial runs down the order. DC were 149/8 after 19 overs with the penultimate over yielding just three runs. However, Porel propelled DC’s score to 174/9 in their allotted 20 overs scoring 25 runs off the last over against Harshal Patel. Porel remained unbeaten on 32* (10) smashing four fours and two sixes.

4. Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone seal the win for Punjab

At 100/4 after 11.3 overs, Punjab required another 75 runs to win off 51 balls. It was the pair of Curran and Livingstone that bailed their team out of the trick situation with their match-winning partnership of 67 (42) for the fourth wicket. Curran got out on 63 (47) with Punjab just eight runs away from a win while Livingstone took his team over the line with an unbeaten knock of 38* (21).
