Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) defeated the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by five wickets at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday, May 18.
Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and opted to bat first, citing that the pitch was dry. Sanju Samson got off to a blistering start, smashing 27 off 13 balls. Urvil Patel hit a couple of sixes but once again failed to convert his start into a big score.
Gaikwad struggled to time the ball, and his dismal knock of 15 off 21 balls ended in the 12th over. This happened after Kartik Sharma played a quickfire knock of 32 in 19 deliveries. However, the best batter on the night for the five-time champions was Dewald Brevis. The youngster slammed a 27-ball 44 to help CSK get to 180/7.
In reply, Travis Head was dismissed cheaply, but Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan forged a 38-run stand to steady the ship. However, after Abhishek was dismissed, SRH needed a move on, and it came from the match-winning 75-run partnership off 41 balls from Heinrich Klaasen and Kishan.
After Klaasen departed in the 15th over, Nitish Kumar Reddy couldn't make much of a contribution, even as Kishan held the innings together. The wicketkeeper-batter was eventually dismissed in the penultimate over, but SRH needed only six runs to win at that point.
On the last ball of the 19th over, Smaran Ravichandran hit Anshul Kamboj for a boundary and helped SRH and also the Gujarat Titans make it to the playoffs.
Key moments of the game:
Pat Cummins leads from the front
SRH captain Pat Cummins bowled a fantastic spell in a high-pressure game on Monday. He dismissed the opening duo of Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad and also sent the in-form Kartik Sharma back to the hut. In the end, the Australian stalwart finished with figures of 3/28 in four overs.
Heinrich Klaasen puts on a show at Chepauk
When Heinrich Klaasen walked out to bat, SRH needed another 125 runs from 74 balls on a sluggish surface. Spinners Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad were looking to apply pressure through the middle overs. However, Klaasen's counter-attacking display forced Gaikwad to rethink his strategy. When Noor dismissed the South African batter, he had already scored 47 off 26 balls and taken his team to a solid position. He was dropped on 18 by Spencer Johnson. That was a crucial moment in the match.
Ishan Kishan mixes caution with aggression in superb batting effort
Ishan Kishan played another match-winning knock this season, and this one wasn't one of the flamboyant knocks he is known for. Rather, this was a great display of grit and determination from the youngster. He picked his bowlers and targeted the loose balls to get his runs. In his 70-run knock off 47 balls, the southpaw hit seven fours and three sixes.
