IPL generation's Test cricket success is a mystery, says Manjrekar
The former India batsman compared the format transition to pop singers attempting classical ragas, expressing surprise at how T20-bred players excel in Tests.
Sanjay Manjrekar has expressed puzzlement at how cricketers developed through the Indian Premier League and T20 formats have managed to excel in Test cricket despite the vastly different demands of the longer format. The former India batsman drew an unusual musical comparison to illustrate the challenge he perceives in such a transition.
Speaking during a broadcast discussion, Manjrekar highlighted the contrast between the two formats and the difficulty he sees in moving between them. He used a classical music analogy to frame his observation about the IPL generation's unexpected success in Test cricket.
"Modern pop singers, if they are asked to do classical singing, ragas, then it will be very difficult. But these people are doing that. It is a mystery to me that the generation of IPL, the generation of T20, how do they play such good Test cricket?" Manjrekar was quoted as saying by India Today.
Why the format transition appears unusual to Manjrekar
The batting demands of T20 and Test cricket are fundamentally different. In T20 cricket, batters are required to adopt an attacking approach from the outset, scoring quickly and taking calculated risks to maximise runs in a limited number of overs. Test cricket, by contrast, demands patience, discipline and the ability to concentrate for extended periods while building an innings methodically.
Manjrekar identified batting as the area where the format differences are most pronounced. The transition from the aggressive, risk-taking mindset needed in T20 to the measured, defensive approach required in Tests represents a significant mental and technical shift for players accustomed to shorter formats.
"More in case of batting, because there is a lot of difference between T20 batting and Test batting," he added.
Manjrekar has previously noted that Test cricket requires batters to get close to the ball, a fundamental principle that contrasts sharply with T20 positioning.

How IPL experience shapes Test cricket performance
The IPL has provided Indian cricketers with consistent exposure to high-pressure T20 cricket and the opportunity to learn alongside experienced international players in shared dressing rooms. This experience has created a generation of players with significant T20 credentials and exposure to world-class cricket at an early stage of their careers.
Several players from the IPL generation have successfully adapted their approach to Test cricket, demonstrating the ability to curb their attacking instincts when the format demands it. India's current Test squad includes multiple players who developed their skills primarily through IPL participation, yet have managed to perform effectively in the longer format by adjusting their batting philosophy and game awareness.
