KL Rahul goes unsold in Maharaja Trophy auction at base price of INR 2 lakh
The 34-year-old had a base price of INR 2 lakh and remains the most high-profile to go without any teams raising the hammer.
India wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul has made headlines after going unsold in the Maharaja Trophy 2026 player auction taking place on Friday, June 5. The 34-year-old had a base price of INR 2 lakh and remains the most high-profile to go without any teams raising the hammer.
Despite the shocking news, there are several reasons why teams did not want to go for Rahul in the auction. The top order batter remains a vital member of India's Test and One Day International (ODI) sides and will be expected to have a busy schedule juggling between his international commitments.
Rahul has currently formed part of India's Test setup ahead of their one-off game against Afghanistan, which commences on Saturday, June 6. He will also compete in the three-match ODI series against the same opposition, which will begin on June 13. With the Maharaja Trophy 2026 starting from June 20, it makes sense that teams do not want to invest in Rahul. The right-handed batter will want a break from cricket before he travels to England to play in yet another ODI series.
It is worth mentioning that Rahul has previously competed in the Karnataka Premier League, the precursor to the Maharaja Trophy. Most notably, the Indian international ended the 2014 season as the tournament's highest run-getter, having hit 347 runs at an average of 69.40, whilst striking at 160.64.
Rahul has completely reinvented himself as a T20 batter in recent times and has enjoyed a couple of fruitful seasons representing the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. In the recently concluded campaign, the wicketkeeper-batter scored 593 runs at a strike-rate of 174.41, the highest in his IPL career. He also scored an unbeaten 152 against the Punjab Kings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the highest individual score by an Indian in the tournament's history.

Despite Rahul not finding any suitable buyers, a host of well-established cricketers found a team ahead of the 2026 Maharaja Trophy. These include the likes of Devdutt Padikkal, Mayank Agarawal, Manish Pandey, Prasidh Krishna, Shreyas Gopal, Smaran Ravichandran and Vijaykumar Vyshak, to name a few. However, it was Karun Nair who fetched the highest bid, being sold for INR 18 lakh.
