Former South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs took a dig at the Indian cricket team, stating that a lack of intent led to their defeat in the third Test against England at Lord’s. India’s top-order batters failed to deliver while chasing a target of 193. Although Ravindra Jadeja scored a fighting half-century to take the team close, they ultimately fell short by 22 runs.

Gibbs took to social media to share his assessment of India’s performance, making a sharp remark about the lack of intent during the run chase.

“Came close in the end, but lack of intent cost India the game,” Gibbs wrote on X.

Although many users initially believed the comment was directed at Jadeja, Gibbs later clarified in a response that he was actually referring to Jasprit Bumrah.

“Bumrah has the most runs in an over for a batsman in test cricket… where was that intent today?,” Gibbs replied to one of the conversations in the same thread.

Gibbs was referring to Bumrah’s record of scoring the most runs in a single over in Test cricket, 35 runs off Stuart Broad during the tour of 2021-22, when he commented on a lack of intent in India’s batting. However, Bumrah failed to replicate those heroics during the third Test at Lord’s on Sunday against the Ben Stokes-led side.

Meanwhile, Indian skipper Shubman Gill expressed his disappointment following the narrow 22-run defeat, as India fell short while chasing a modest target of 193. Despite the loss, Gill said he was proud of the team's fight and believed they could have applied themselves better with the bat, especially in the final session on Day 4.

India’s tail-enders, along with Jadeja, showed strong resistance. Jadeja played a vital knock, while Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj stitched crucial partnerships with him after India had slumped to 82 for 7. Gill noted that a couple of 50-run partnerships from the top order would likely have sealed the chase.

Now, the fourth Test is set to take place at Old Trafford in Manchester, beginning on July 23. It is worth mentioning that The Three Lions currently lead the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-1.
