The Africa Cricket Association (ACA), which deals with cricketing affairs in the continent, has unanimously appointed Tavengwa Mukuhlani as the seating chairperson. Notably, Mukuhlani, also the head of Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC), had been serving the position on an interim basis for the last eight months, and the appointment on Saturday, will now see him look over the proceedings in a full-time capacity.

The continental association is set to bring a plethora of changes to its administration and governance to ensure a better way of running the show. With Mukuhlani at the helm, the body will certainly hope for bringing out the beginning of a new era for African cricketing fraternity. The Zimbabwean hopes to ensure widespread opportunities and more ambitious process of governance in cricket.

“We stand today at the threshold of a new era for African cricket — an era defined by stronger governance, broader opportunity and renewed ambition. Let us continue building on the progress we have made, united by a common purpose and driven by a shared love for the game,” he said in a statement from Zimbabwe Cricket on Saturday.

One of the important milestones under Mukuhlani's leadership will be to bring the resumption of the popular Afro-Asia Cup into realization. The intercontinental series was liked by cricket enthusiasts in the late 2000s, as it included some of the fiercest competitors under one roof, playing in the One-Day International (ODI) format. Another landmark move will aim at including the sport in the African Games in 2027, set to be held in Egypt.

“These engagements are crucial not only for visibility but also for opening new doors of investment, policy support and continental collaboration,” the chairperson added on the matter.

African Games, like the name suggests, is a continental multi-sports event where cricket was first played in 2023, and Zimbabwe emerged as the ultimate winners. If cricket remains a part of the quadrennial event in 2027 as well, the Chevrons will look to defend their medal and build on the dominance.
