Mumbai to make documentary on 2026-27 season, seeks BCCI nod
The Mumbai Cricket Association has approached BCCI CEO Hemang Amin for permission to film the Mumbai senior team's entire 2026-27 domestic campaign.
The Mumbai Cricket Association has formally requested permission from the Board of Control for Cricket in India to document the Mumbai senior team's entire 2026-27 domestic season, making it the first state association in India to propose such a project.
MCA staff executives met BCCI CEO Hemang Amin to seek the necessary clearances. The association is planning a production modelled on The Test, the Amazon Prime Video docu-series that followed the Australian cricket team across multiple seasons. MCA president Ajinkya Naik confirmed the approach and outlined the vision behind it.
"Whether it takes the form of a web series or a documentary will be decided as we progress, but the idea is to give fans a unique look at what goes on behind the scenes with the Mumbai team throughout the season. We have requested a few permissions from the BCCI, as we want to document the entire season of the Mumbai senior team," Naik told The Indian Express.
The BCCI's formal response to the request is currently pending, but the MCA is positive that it will get a green signal from the board.
What does MCA want to capture in the documentary?
The MCA's stated plan is to follow the Mumbai senior team from the very first day of their Ranji Trophy preparations right through to the final match of the 2026-27 domestic campaign. The association intends to use the project to highlight Mumbai's standing as the most decorated side in Indian domestic cricket, having won the Ranji Trophy 42 times.
"We want to capture the journey from Day 1 of our senior team’s preparations for the Ranji Trophy right through to the final match of the season. Mumbai cricket has such a rich heritage, and we felt, ‘why not showcase it to the world?’ Let people see what goes into the making of a 42-time Ranji Trophy champion side," Naik elaborated the scope of the project.
The 2026-27 domestic season will also include the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy after the Ranji Trophy concludes, giving the production a broad canvas across formats if the project receives BCCI approval.
How does MCA plan to distribute and monetise the project?
Once produced, the MCA intends to sell the documentary or web series to OTT platforms, positioning it as a commercial venture rather than an internal archive. The final format, whether a multi-episode web series or a standalone documentary, has not been fixed and will be determined as the project develops.
The Ranji Trophy 2026-27 schedule provides a clear production timeline. Phase 1 runs from October 11 to November 5, Phase 2 from January 17 to February 4, and the knockout rounds from February 9 to March 3. That structure gives the production team defined windows across the season to film competitive cricket alongside behind-the-scenes content.
No production house or streaming partner has been announced publicly, and the project remains subject to BCCI clearance before any filming can begin.
