Devdutt Padikkal might have had to sit on the bench had Sai Sudharsan not been ruled out due to injury. However, the Karnataka batter made no mistake when he got the opportunity, as he grabbed it with both hands and made significant contributions in both innings of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium. The five-day encounter finished on Wednesday, August 19, with India winning by 165 runs, marking the nation's 600th Test match.

Playing his first Test since November 2024, Padikkal delivered a dual-innings performance that caught the attention of cricket observers. His approach combined caution with aggression, reflecting maturity and understanding of match situations. The left-hander's ability to adapt his batting to different phases of play proved instrumental in India's commanding victory.

In the first innings, he slammed a graceful 167 off 230 balls, hitting 15 fours and one six. While he only managed 44 in the second essay, Dinesh Karthik praised the knock, highlighting how it was aesthetically pleasing.

"Devdutt Padikkal stood out in both innings. Though he only got 44 in the second innings, it was laced with composure, elegance and quality stroke-making," Karthik said in an Instagram video.

Padikkal's maiden Test century and opening partnership

In the first innings, Padikkal's knock was built on solid technique and consistent stroke-making, allowing India to establish a commanding position in the match. The batter reached his century off just 134 balls, demonstrating both patience and intent when the situation demanded it. His first-innings contribution provided the team with a substantial foundation for their eventual victory.

Padikkal's second-innings contribution of 44 runs, though modest in comparison to his first-innings total, carried the same hallmarks of composure and elegance that Karthik identified. In a match situation where India was consolidating their advantage, the batter's approach reflected tactical awareness. His performance across both innings demonstrated that he can perform at the highest level when opportunities come his way, establishing himself as a capable middle-order batter for India's Test team.
