Stats: KL Rahul goes past 1000 Test runs in England
Rahul also became only the fourth Indian Test opener to score 1000-plus runs in an away country.
Star batter KL Rahul got past the 1000-run mark in Tests in England during the ongoing fourth game of the five-match series between England and India. He completed his 1000th run after knocking a single on the first ball of the 19th over of India's first innings on Day 1 of the ongoing game, being played at the iconic Old Trafford in Manchester.
Rahul is now only the second Test opener for India to breach past the four-digit mark in an away country. He is next to the legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar. The Mumbai-born has gone past 1000 runs in West Indies (1404), England (1152), and Pakistan (1001) at the time of his international retirement.
Out of the 25 Test innings Rahul has played in England so far, only a couple of them have been as a non-opener. Both these instances were during his debut Test in the country during the 2018 tour. He was able to score only 4 and 13 in the two innings, respectively.
Rahul's Test record in England:
Matches | Innings | Average | Strike Rate | Runs |
13* | 25 | 42.87 | 53.12 | 1029* |
*as of Lunch on Day 1 of fourth Test
Rahul pairs with Yashasvi Jaiswal for a dominating first session
The Karnataka batter's first boundary came off a pull in front of square on the ninth delivery he faced in the innings. His second four was off Chris Woakes again. Rahul's third and fourth boundaries were cracking ones off Brydon Carse through the off side. At Lunch, the 33-year-old had scored 40 out of the 78 runs scored by India, with his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal (34*) still alongside.
As far as the series is concerned, Rahul has registered two centuries and one fifty in the three matches so far. With only one single-digit score (2 in 2nd Test, Edgbaston), the seasoned batter has looked really comfortable facing the English bowling attack. This was also the first time since 1946 that India's openers brought up a fifty-plus stand in Manchester in the longest format of the game.
