'Trying to execute that as well as I can' - Glenn Maxwell aims for bigger role with new-ball bowling
Maxwell has featured as a Powerplay option for quite some time now.
Glenn Maxwell has aimed for taking on a more enhanced role while opening the bowling for Australia going forward. Maxwell has featured as a Powerplay option for country and franchises since quite some time now. The star all-rounder has had a reputation of being a fierce, hard-hitter of the cricket ball, but never really shined in his prowess with the ball. He, however, wants to change that and contribute in challenging situations for Australia.
He hinted towards the responsibility and how he would be eager to make the most of it. Considering the T20 World Cup to be held next year in spin bowling-friendly conditions in India and Sri Lanka, Maxwell is also looking to bowl inside the powerplay overs, which is a daunting task at times, given the changing dynamics of batters in the shortest format of the game of late.
"I think in the subcontinent, you might be able to get a little bit more out of it as a spinner early on. Especially that new ball, the hard seam, being able to grip on those dry surfaces. So, it might be something we think about heading forward," stated Maxwell, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
Maxwell also shed light on his ecstatic celebrations after securing the wicket of Aiden Markram in the second T20I of the ongoing series. The 36-year-old also commented on his floater-type role as a batter in order to help his team in whatever capacity possible.
"I'm just as surprised as anyone when I get a wicket. I love getting wickets. It's very surprising anytime I get anyone out. I'm there to do a job in the Powerplay and I'm trying to execute that as well as I can. I've been a bit of the shuffler around the order, up and down. I'm filling holes at the moment. Even during the West Indies series, trying to combat Akeal Hosein (by) going up the top, this series going a little bit lower, trying to manage that back end. (I'm) trying to play whatever role is needed for me in this side and just try and be as adaptable as possible," he commented.
Singh, Patel surnames dominate Cricket Australia registry
Speaking of Maxwell's record while bowling, 17 out of his 49 wickets have come in the first six overs while playing T20Is for Australia. He has bowled at an economy rate of 7.30 in the IPL since the 2022 instalment, while picking up eight wickets in the process.
