[WATCH] WI vs AUS 2025: Scott Boland wraps up series in style with memorable hat-trick
Boland's hattrick was the first one to be recorded in pink-ball Tests.
Scott Boland picked up the first hat-trick in pink-ball Tests during the final innings of the third match of the recently-concluded series between West Indies and Australia. He cleaned up the tail to grant Australia a 176-run win to wrap up the series. The bulk of the bowling was done by Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, with Boland's figures reading 3/2 in two overs, including a maiden as well.
The 14th over of West Indies' winnings was when Boland claimed this wonderful milestone. His first victim was Justin Greaves (11 off 24), who edged an incoming ball on the fourth stump for Beau Webster to do the rest at second slip. Shamar Joseph and Jomel Warrican were subsequently dismissed on respective golden ducks for Boland to secure the 49th hat-trick in the history of red-ball internationals.
Speaking of the game, Australia emerged victorious by 176 runs at Sabina Park in Kingston. They bundled out the hosts for a miserly 27 after setting a target of 204 for the hosts to chase in the fourth innings. Mitchell Starc was the key architect of the collapse. The left-arm pacer, playing in his 100th Test, ended up with figures of 6/9 in 7.3 overs. He also went past the 400-wicket tally with this sensational spell of bowling in Jamaica.
Starc becomes fourth Australian to scalp 400 Test wickets
Starc struck with three wickets in the very first over to set the tone for the Pat Cummins-led unit. He also etched his name into the record books for bagging the quickest five-wicket haul in the history of Test cricket (15 balls OR 2.3 overs). Josh Hazlewood picked up a wicket as well. It was a truly commanding display by the Aussies, who ended up whitewashing the Roston Chase-led side to launch their 2025-27 WTC on a triumphant note.
The sides will now be competing for a five-match T20I contest. Both the teams are two-time T20 World Cup-winners, and will be hoping to give fans a run for their money. Speaking of the Pat Cummins-led side will now play a Test series, when they take on England for the 2025 edition of The Ashes, set to begin in November with the opening game to be played at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
