Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by an innings and 78 runs in the second Test.
After a drawn first Test, Sri Lanka bounced back brilliantly to register a win over Bangladesh by an innings and 78 runs in the second Test at the SSC in Colombo, finishing the series 1-0. Thanks to a solid all-round performance over four days, the hosts began their ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle on a positive note.
The game began with Bangladesh winning the toss and opting to bat. However, rain interruptions and poor batting outings saw them bundle out for 247 in their first innings. Despite a 46 from Shadman Islam and small cameos from the middle order, the visiting team couldn’t capitalise. Debutant Sonal Dinusha picked up a three-wicket haul, while Asitha Fernando also finished with three scalps.
Sri Lanka’s first innings with the bat was impressive to watch as Pathum Nissanka smashed 158 off 254 balls, his second century of the series. He was well supported by Dinesh Chandimal (93), Kusal Mendis (84), and Kamindu Mendis (33), guiding the hosts to a massive total of 458, taking a lead of 211 runs. For Bangladesh, Taijul Islam picked up five wickets.
Prabath Jayasuriya, who had gone wicketless in the first innings, bounced back on Day 4, claiming a clinical 5 for 56, dismantling Bangladesh's batting line-up. Meanwhile, Tharindu Ratnayake and captain Dhananjaya de Silva picked up two wickets apiece, leading to Bangladesh collapsing for just 133 in 44.2 overs, losing their last four wickets in just 28 minutes on the final morning. Nissanka’s brilliance throughout the series earned him both the Player of the Match and Player of the Series awards. He hammered 369 runs across two Tests, including scores of 187 and 158.
Najmul Hossain Shanto steps down as Bangladesh Test captain
Notably, Najmul Hossain Shanto stepped down as Bangladesh's Test captain after the match, following recent losses across formats. Both sides will now move on to the white-ball leg of the tour, with three ODIs and three T20Is scheduled, starting Wednesday, July 2.
