SL vs BAN 2nd Test, Day 1: Sonal Dinusha shines on debut, leads all-round bowling effort to crumble Sri Lanka
None of the Bangladeshi batters could truly capitalise on their starts.
Bangladesh ended Day 1 of the second Test of the ongoing two-match series against Sri Lanka on 220/8 at the end of 71 overs. Similar to the series opener, it was the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side who won the toss and opted to bat first.
Anamul Haque's stay at the crease lasted for a total of 10 balls. The opening batter was dismissed for a ten-ball duck. Asitha Fernando and Vishwa Fernando's first overs yielded only two and four runs, respectively. Bangladesh crawled to 12/1 after 10 overs. Three boundaries in the next three overs boosted the run rate to more than twice what it was at the 10-over mark.
Dhananjaya de Silva brought himself on in the 17th over and produced an instantaneous impact by striking on the first ball to get rid of Mominul Haque (21 off 39). No more wickets fell till Lunch was taken. More than half of Bangladesh's total (71) was scored by Shadman Islam. Vishwa struck on the final ball of the second over in the post-lunch session to dismiss Shanto (eight off 31).
Tharindu Ratnayake struck in the very next over to get rid of Shadman, who added just three more runs in the second session before getting dismissed for 46 off 93. A delay due to rain and a subsequent wet outfield meant there was no play between 1:19 p.m. (IST) and 2:54 pm (IST). Mushfiqur Rahim was joined by Litton Das. The pair stuck around for quite a while to stabilise proceedings.

Litton became Dinusha's maiden international wicket
Speaking of the debutant, Litton Das fell to Sonal Dinusha for 34 off 56, with the latter scalping his maiden international wicket, which was also his 100th First-Class dismissal. Tea was taken with Bangladesh reeling at 144/5 in 49 overs. Dinusha resumed the game post the break and ended up bowling his third straight maiden. The first runs came off the bowling all-rounder's bowling on the third ball of his fourth over.
Dinusha got the big fish on the final ball of his fifth over. Mushfiqur's aerial attempt at a slog-sweep was caught in the deep square leg region. The seasoned veteran departed after scoring 35 off 75. Mehidy Hasan Miraz (31 off 42) became the third batter to depart in the 30s. It was a well-deserved wicket for Vishwa because he had toiled hard for it.
Nayeem Hasan was joined by Taijul Islam in the middle. Taijul was happy to fend balls, while it was Nayeem who did the bulk of the scoring during their time together. A length delivery by Asitha, which angled in slightly, beat the outside edge after straightening to get rid of Nayeem (25 off 51). Play concluded after 71 overs were bowled. Bangladesh finished the day with two wickets to spare.
