India defeated Sri Lanka by 97 runs on Sunday, May 11, to win the Tri-Nation ODI series at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and opted to bat first on what seemed like an excellent batting surface. India got off to a solid start as Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal forged a 70-run stand. The latter was dismissed in the 15th over for a 49-ball 30.
Harleen Deol played a classy knock, scoring 47 off 56 balls. Meanwhile, Mandhana notched up a belligerent century. The southpaw was dismissed after scoring a remarkable 116 off 101 balls, hitting 15 fours and two sixes. She departed in the 33rd over after adding 120 runs with Deol. Deol was dismissed by Dewmi Vihanga in the 37th over.
Harmanpreet and Jemimah Rodrigues joined forces and they scored some quick runs. The former made a 30-ball 41, while the latter scored 44 off the 29 balls he faced. Richa Ghosh was dismissed cheaply but important cameos from Amanjot Kaur (18 off 12) and Deepti Sharma (20 off 14) helped the Women in Blue post a massive total of 342/7. Sugandika Kumar was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka as she finished with figures of 2/59 in her 10 overs.
In reply, the visitors got off to a magnificent start as Amanjot Kaur sent Hasini Perera packing in the third ball of the innings. Vishmi Gunaratne and captain Chamari Athapaththu steadied the ship with a 68-run partnership. After Gunaratne was dismissed for a 41-ball 36, Nilakshi de Silva joined her skipper in the middle.
The third-wicket partnership yielded 53 runs off 57 balls. Athapaththu got her half-century and the hopes were resting on her to take Sri Lanka to a famous win. However, Sneh Rana dismissed her in the 24th over. Harshita Samarawickrama and Nilakshi continued the fight, stitching a 52-run stand off 57 deliveries.
However, from 173/3, Sri Lanka crumbled to 192/7, as India dominated proceedings. Anushka Sanjeewani and Sugandika Kumari delayed the inevitable with gritty knocks before the hosts were bowled out for 245 in 48.2 overs. Sneh Rana starred with the ball, picking up four wickets for 38 runs in 9.2 overs. Amanjot also bagged a three-for.
