WI vs AUS 2025, 3rd Test Day 1 Review: West Indies pacers rip through Australia at Sabina Park
West Indies ended Day 1 on 16 for 1, trailing Australia by 209 runs at stumps.
Australia suffered a dramatic collapse under the Sabina Park floodlights, losing 7 wickets for just 68 runs, eventually dismissed for 225, as West Indies’ pace trio of Jayden Seales, Shamar Joseph, and Justin Greaves ran riot in the third Test of the series. All ten Australian wickets were claimed by the three pacers. However, the visitors struck back late in the day as Mitchell Starc, playing in his 100th Test, took an early wicket to keep things in balance.
Earlier, Australia appeared to be in a commanding position at 129 for 2 just before the dinner break, with Cameron Green and Steven Smith well set. The openers, Sam Konstas and Usman Khawaja, had provided a steady start, though boundaries were less before tea with just four were struck.
Konstas was given an early life when debutant Kevlon Anderson dropped him at third slip on 1 in the fifth over. But his reprieve was short-lived, as Greaves trapped him lbw for 17 off 53 balls. Khawaja, who ground out a patient 23 off 92 balls, fell to a superb catch by Shai Hope, edging Shamar from around the wicket.
Pat Cummins to miss South Africa white-ball series
In the middle session, West Indies were forced to deal with Alzarri Joseph's absence due to back issues, which brought Roston Chase and Jomel Warrican into the attack. Warrican offered Steven Smith a life on 24, failing to hold on to a return catch. Just before the dinner break, Seales produced a beauty to dismiss Green for 46 off 108, clipping the top of the bails.
Smith, who looked in good touch, tried to slash Shamar over the cordon but was caught brilliantly by Brandon King at first slip for 48. Beau Webster also edged behind without making an impact.
Travis Head, known for his counter attacking style, could not shift the momentum this time. He attempted to loft Greaves over the off-side, only to be caught spectacularly by Anderson Phillip, who flew horizontally to his right at mid-off to complete an extraordinary catch.
Alex Carey briefly counterattacked with a six over mid-off but was soon caught behind. Pat Cummins struck three sixes in a brief flurry, swinging aggressively before holing out to long-on. Shamar wrapped up the innings by removing Josh Hazlewood, taking his series tally to 17 wickets.
Shamar finished with impressive figures of 4 for 33, while Seales claimed 3 for 59 and Greaves 3 for 56. At stumps on Day 1, West Indies trailed by 209 runs, with Brandon King (8*) and Roston Chase (3*) at the crease.
