Curator Sujan Mukherjee feels dew won’t be a problem at Eden Gardens during first-ever day-night Test

As Bangladesh Cricket Board confirmed playing the second Test match of the upcoming two-match series against India in Eden Gardens, Kolkata as a day-night venture, it marked a big milestone in Indian cricket, as it will be the first time India plays with the pink ball in five-day international format. The match will start on November 22.

Before the match even begins, on one hand, people are lauding BCCI President Sourav Ganguly for his work in making this a dream and as per his conviction, day-night Tests are the way to keep the format alive. However, on the other hand, fingers have been raised at the venue chosen, given how much dew is present at the ground under lights during international matches and the outfield as well.

Curator says he has plans to tackle the dew problem at the Eden Gardens

However, the Eden curator Sujan Mukherjee feels otherwise. He has given assurance that the match won’t be affected by the dew at all and the wicket that will be prepared by him for the Test will be a more sporting one than usually found on Eden Gardens pitch. This is not the first time Kolkata is hosting pink ball games, as, under Ganguly’s tenure as CAB President, domestic games were played under lights.

“Since it’s an early start, the day will get over by 8-8.30 p.m. The dew factor comes into play mostly after that as we have seen in a white-ball game this time of the year at Eden. Therefore, I don’t think dew will be a problem. We also have arrangements to tackle dew issues like treatment sprays and all that,” Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) curator Sujan was quoted as saying by News 18.

The previous game played under lights on this ground was the CAB Super League game between Mohun Bagan and Bhowanipore Club in 2016 and Mohammad Shami was unplayable with the pink SG ball, which swung and seam prodigiously. Even the 2017 Duleep Trophy matches which were played with pink ball and under lights, were full of problems with difficulty locating the ball in the air against dark night skies.
