Dale Steyn ranks the best fast bowlers from the current crop

While it may be a tough pick for others, with the Proteas boasting of a lineage of lethal pacers, it seemed like an easy task for Steyn.

A dominant force at home, South Africa’s recent performance against the no.1 ranked Indian Test team serves as a testament to the fact. The Proteas, on the back of some lethal bowling, sealed the ongoing three-match Test series 2-0 after respective wins in Cape Town and Centurion. And with the upcoming rubber fixture set to kickoff today, the hosts will aim to go full throttle at the visitors in a bid to register a whitewash.

However, South Africa will be devoid of the services of marquee pacer Dale Steyn. Steyn suffered an ankle injury during the opener in Cape Town and has been on the sidelines since. Playing his first Test match since he injured his shoulder against Australia in November 2016, the 34-year-old picked up an injury to his left heel in the final over before tea on Day 2 of the first Test against India.

Steyn sustained serious tissue damage to his left heel as he landed awkwardly in a foot-hole. And it was confirmed after subsequent scans that the Phalaborwa Express will have to spend it on the bench for the remainder of the series.

While Steyn has been missing out on all on-field action, the speedster has been active on social media expressing his support for the team. He recently posted a tweet stating that he was open for some ‘Q and A’. Replying to his Tweet a fan posed him with a brain teaser. Steyn was asked to pick his favourite bowler from the current crop.

While it may be a tough pick for others, with the Proteas boasting of a lineage of lethal pacers, it seemed like an easy task for Steyn. His reply was, “Easy. Morkel, Rabada, Philander, Ngidi and Ben Laughlin. Maybe a few others too, Archer, he’s good.”

The two teams lock horns today in the final fixture in Johannesburg. While the hosts will try to establish a whitewash, India will aim to counter that and end on a winning note prior to the limited-overs leg kicks off.
