I don't think Keaton Jennings has done himself any favours: Nasser Hussain

After his impressive tour of India in 2016, the left-hander has strained to find his feet in Test cricket.

England are currently playing a five-match Test series against India and it hasn’t been a joyful ride for Keaton Jennings by any stretch of the imagination. The left-handed batsman scored 42 runs at Edgbaston in Birmingham to start the series decently but hasn’t been able to make an impact with the willow thereafter. In nine innings, he has scored 163 runs at a horrendous average of 18.11.

In October and November, the Three Lions are scheduled to tour Sri Lanka for a Test, ODI, and T20I series. The red-ball fixtures start on November 6. In the meantime, Nasser Hussain, the former English captain, believes that Jennings hasn’t justified his talent one bit and will be selected for the tour solely for the reason that Alastair Cook will be retiring after the ongoing match at Kennington Oval in London.

I think he’s vulnerable

“A week ago I’d have wanted Jennings in Sri Lanka as I think he’s a very good player of spin – but he’s fluffed his lines. Two soft dismissals in this match, poking it around the corner to leg slip in the first innings and leaving against a skiddy bowler from around the wicket in the second innings, could be it.

I think he’s vulnerable. I don’t think he’s done himself any favours but I think they’ll want to take him because the lad at the other end is retiring,” Hussain was quoted as saying in Sky Sports.

Jennings made his debut against India itself at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai back in 2016 and churned out a superlative century in his maiden Test innings. Thereafter, he scored a half-century in his next encounter in Chennai. Thereafter he couldn’t perform and was subsequently dropped.

The Johannesburg-born batsman made his comeback in the Test series against Pakistan earlier this year, replacing Mark Stoneman, another left-handed batter.
