The Indian squad for World Cup 2019 was announced yesterday and the fans, as well as experts, have been since looking at all the minute details surrounding it. From the inclusion and exclusion of a few players to the overall team combination, all of it has been discussed and debated extensively. Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has also presented his views on the Indian team’s bowling attack for the tournament.

Men in Blue’s pace attack comprises of three front line fast bowlers along with two-seam bowling all-rounders. The Jasprit Bumrah-led battery is completed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami. While all three of them have been in good enough form, Gambhir thinks they should’ve had a fourth seamer for a robust attack.

He said that was, in fact, the only thing missing in the squad. Gambhir would’ve picked local boy Navdeep Saini from Delhi as the fourth seamer. Given his ability to clock high on the speed gun and favourable conditions in England, it was an easy choice to make for the former Delhi captain.

Lack of fourth seamer

“If there is something missing in the squad, India lacks a fourth seamer. It is a big and long tournament. You have three seamers. Hardik and Vijay are your all-rounders. That’s why I picked Navdeep Saini as fourth seamer because in those conditions you need someone as a back up to your three seamers,” Gambhir was quoted as saying by TOI.

Team India last won the World Cup in 2011 and this team under Virat Kohli is expected to repeat the heroics. When Gauti was asked how this side fares when compared to MS Dhoni’s team from 2011, he thinks this is, in fact, a better team.

“This is a better squad than 2011 and I really wish this is the better squad. You can’t compare eras. 2011 will be different to 2015, 2019 will be different to 2015 and I hope and believe that the 2019 squad is the better squad. All I want to say is that I don’t like comparing eras and one shouldn’t do that. The bowling attack of 2019 World Cup is far better than the ones in 2011 and 2015,” Gambhir stated.
