Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly recently heaped praises on young Indian batsman KL Rahul. Rahul had top scored in India’s thumping win in the Cuttack T20I against Sri Lanka recently. He was making a comeback to the national setup and hence was under some pressure as he arrived in to the side.

In his recent column for the TOI, Sourav Ganguly wrote at brief about his expectations from KL Rahul. Ganguly affirmed that he is very pleased to see KL Rahul get amongst the runs yet again. Last season, Rahul was at the peak of his form as he had plundered runs across all the three formats of the game. He, however, lost the plot as the season progressed and he had injury to recover from.

Sourav Ganguly went on to quote that KL Rahul could be the solution for India’s number 4 woes. Over the last few months, the team has tried several batsmen at the number 4 slot but are yet to finalize someone for the role, keeping the 2019 World Cup in mind.

“I am also happy to see KL Rahul score runs again. He is a very good player and the selectors need to give him confidence. He is, for me, the solution to the No.4 woes for India in One-day cricket in tough conditions because on quick pitches, the backfoot game is important and Rahul has one. Don’t let him lose confidence,” wrote Sourav Ganguly.

Troubled times

It is worth noting that the experimentation for the number 4 slot had begun with Rahul during the Sri Lanka series in Sri Lanka. The team wanted to accommodate him in the lineup. But with Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma taking the opening roles, Rahul was sent at number 4. He certainly did not have a great time batting at that position and was subsequently ignored for the series that followed.
