He is known to be one of the coolest brains on the ground. During his days as the captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was hardly seen losing his temper on the ground. There have been very few exceptions when the Ranchi wicketkeeper lost his cool as it was seen during a game in the Indian Premier League this year but those exceptions prove the rule.

And now, when the 38-year-old has been asked whether he is really as “cool” as people think he is and how he controls his emotions, Dhoni conceded that he also feels frustrated, angry and disappointed at times with things happening around. But at the same time, Dhoni also knows that frustration is not something “constructive”. Speaking at an event in Mumbai recently, Dhoni said it is very important how one channelizes the emotion.

‘I also feel irritation when things do not go our way’

“I also feel the irritation if things do not go our way. But its all about how do you channelize that. It is about whether the frustration was leading to something wrong for the team. I feel equally emotional I feel angry at times I feel disappointed but what is important is none of these are constructive. What needs to be done at the moment is more important than any of these emotions. I am just like everyone else but I just control my emotions slightly better than some of the other individuals,” he said.

He, however, failed to control his emotions in an IPL game when he walked backed onto the turf to protest the umpire’s decision over calling a no-ball. Dhoni, who won India two World Cups — in 2007 (20 overs) and 2011 (50 overs) — and is still the most successful captain the country has produced in the limited-over formats (Virat Kohli recently broke his win records in Tests) is yet to call it a day in international cricket.

He has not played in the last two international series against the West Indies and South Africa and is also set to miss the upcoming one against Bangladesh. The fans are eagerly waiting to see whether the veteran cricketer continues to don India colors and survive till the 2020 T20 World Cup in Australia.

Dhoni came under strong criticism for his slow batting over the last few months and especially in the World Cup. His last international outing was in the semi-final of the showpiece event when he took India close to a win but a direct throw from Martin Guptill ended his stay at the wicket and shattered the team’s hopes of making the final. Dhoni went to military training after the World Cup as the team left for the West Indies and hasn’t played against the Proteas either.

At the event, Dhoni also stressed how the senior players need to handle younger players, saying the seniors must be honest and lead by example.
