Former England skipper Michael Vaughan spoke at length about the prospects ahead for the England team recently. England were handed an innings defeat at Mumbai by the India team today. The defeat meant they went down 3-0 in the series with a Test still to be played. In a recent conversation with BBC Test Match Special, Vaughan looked visibly worried about the current English squad.

He said that losing might not be a concern for a moment. But the way they are losing is questionable. He rightly cited that this was their 6th Test in the last couple of months in the subcontinent conditions. The margins of defeat has been increasing. England lost by 246 runs at Vizag, by 8 wickets at Mohali and then by an innings margin at Mumbai. Michael Vaughan questioned whether the England team is learning on the go or not.

Talking about the half chances, he compared two keynotes from the Mumbai Test. The word games had begun. Players said that if they had dismissed Virat Kohli on 68 (Kohli was dropped on 68 by Adil Rashid), things could have been different. Kohli went on to score a brilliant double ton. Talking on the same lines, Vaughan pointed out that had India dismissed Keaton Jennings for a duck (Jennings was dropped by Karun Nair on 0 in first innings), the match would have easily been over in three days.

Michael Vaughan then talked about the revamp in the England ODI team set up. He said that the ODI team decided to change their mindset to all aggressive mode after the disastrous World Cup last year. The trick seemed to have worked. However, when it comes to Test cricket, they have been scatterplots. At times, England play an attritional game and at times go on the attacking mode.

He wants the team to sit down and analyze what mode are they actually settling with. He also gave his comments about James Anderson and called him ‘naive’ in his approach in this series.
