Prithvi Shaw was arguably the centre of attraction during the first day of India’s two-match Test series against the Windies as the debutant scored a brilliant 134 in the first two sessions. He shared a 206-run partnership for the second with Cheteshwar Pujara after India lost KL Rahul in the very first over of the game. Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane carried on with a century partnership before the latter got out for 41. Skipper Kohli ended unbeaten on 72 as India finished the day 364/4.

All the stats and numbers that were recorded during the opening day of India-Windies series:

1Prithvi Shaw became the youngest Indian to score a century on Test debut and overall the 4th youngest to do so. He is also the second youngest Test centurion for India and the second youngest opener to score a Test ton.


2 – Instances of India losing a wicket in the first over of a Test series in the last ten years. India lost a wicket on the first ball of the home series against Sri Lanka last year. Both the instances were recorded by the dismissal of KL Rahul.


3 – Number of times India lost a wicket in the first over of a home Test match since 2013. KL Rahul has been the batsman in all the three occasions. He got out on the 4th ball of the one-off Test against Bangladesh in 2017 and on the first ball of the Test series against Sri Lanka in late 2017.


5 – KL Rahul now has been dismissed on five occasions in the first over of Indian innings in Test cricket. Since his debut, there have only been nine instances of India losing their first wicket in first over of a Test innings.


7 – Number of century partnerships between Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli for the 4th wicket in Test cricket. These are the joint-most number of century stands by an Indian pair for the 4th wicket equalling Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly’s seven 100-run partnerships.


26 – Number of fifty-plus scores for Virat Kohli in Test cricket as the Indian captain. These are the second most for an Indian captain in the longer format surpassing Sunil Gavaskar’s 25. Only MS Dhoni stands ahead of Kohli with 29 scores of fifty and more.


72* – Virat Kohli’s fifty in this game is his 5th consecutive fifty-plus score in Test cricket at home. His previous four Test scores in India read: 50, 243, 213 and 104*.


99 – Prithvi Shaw’s 99-ball century is the second fastest by an Indian and the 3rd fastest by any player on Test debut.


2011 – For the first time in more than seven years India featured in a Test match with two players aged less than 22 in their playing eleven. Prithvi Shaw will turn 19 in the month of November while Rishabh Pant is celebrating his 21st birthday today.

The last instance of India having two players aged less than 22 in a Test was in the 2011 Nottingham Test against England when Abhinav Mukund and Ishant Sharma played together.
