IPL 10: Best Catches of the Season

As they say, catches win matches and there have been plenty this season to savor for a long time. Although, there were also many grassed but masses only remember the outstanding ones which changed the course of the matches in the IPL. Looking at the list below, just like the list of death bowlers this tournament, it is largely dominated by the Indians. Indian fielding has been criticized heavily in the past couple of decades, but looking at the list, it is a no-brainer to infer that Indian fielding standard is at par with the Proteas or the Kiwis, if not above it. Nasser Hussain once asserted Indians have a lot of ‘donkeys’ in the field to hide, highlighting the efforts of seamers in the field. But the list contains a couple of Indian fast bowlers who were electric in the field and have taken exceptional catches to put an end to that argument. That said, here is an exclusive collection of the top catches claimed in the tournament. #1 Rohit Sharma (Photo Source: Twitter) Rohit Sharma has always led by example on the field and has taken some brilliant catches in his career. It was during their away match against Royal Challengers Bangalore that Rohit Sharma stunned one and all with yet another stunner to dismiss AB de Villiers. Mr. 360 hit a flashy drive towards covers which only had one place to go had it not been the brilliance of Hitman. He lunged towards his wrong side while trying to grab the ball with both hands but looking at its distance from him, he outstretched his left hand to complete an acrobatic catch and silenced one and all in the venue. #2 Virat Kohli (Photo Source: Twitter) Royal Challengers Bangalore’s captain may have had a lukewarmish tournament with the bat but didn’t exhibit any kind of rust while taking the field. In a game against Rising Pune Supergiant, Pawan Negi flighted a ball to Rahul Tripathi who smashed one from the middle towards the cover region and had only one man to beat for it to go to the boundary. But the only fielder placed there was none other than Kohli. He dived to his left in a flash and took a one-handed blinder, threw the ball in style before anyone had any time to comprehend what magic unfolded before their eyes. This catch would be the highlight of Kohli’s melancholic tournament along with that push over extra-cover for a maximum at Kotla. #3 Suresh Raina Suresh Raina. (Photo Source: Twitter) Suresh Raina has created a revolution in Indian Cricket when it comes to fielding since he took over the reins at Point and Covers from Yuvraj and Kaif. This time Raina showed his brilliance at slips which earned him the Catch of the Season. Ajinkya Rahane tried to guide one towards third-man but only managed to nick one towards the left of Raina. An experienced Raina anticipated the direction of the shot and moved towards his right premeditatively. But the edge from Rahane tried to find its way between Karthik and Raina. However, Raina changed his direction and put out his left hand, pulling off one of the greatest reaction catches in the history of IPL. #4 Parthiv Patel (Photo Source: Twitter) When David Warner visited Wankhede to play against Mumbai Indians, he would have been shocked looking at the reach of Parthiv Patel when he tried to pull off a switch-hit over Backward Point. Warner wasn’t able to time one from Harbhajan Singh and only managed to top-edge one in front of Point. As the ball would have been well short of the man placed at Point, Parthiv Patel took it upon himself to claim the catch just about his reach. The little man dived forward and completed the catch to pull off a screamer, shocking David Warner and co. #5 Wriddhiman Saha (Photo Source: Twitter) Parthiv Patel’s effort was eclipsed by this catch from Saha. Varun Aaron bowled an express delivery to Mandeep Singh who desired to pull one over Square Leg but only managed to top-edge one behind the ropes. As they say, it is never easy to reach a skier behind you, let alone with the floodlights on with ball swirling on its way down. Saha quickly ran back covering a large amount of ground but as soon as he was setting up for the take, the ball seemed to deviate from its course. Saha lunged towards right making a full-length dive compensating for the misjudgment and completed a stunning catch. #6 Sandeep Sharma (Photo Source: Twitter) It is never easy for a bowler to take a catch in the follow through. Sandeep Sharma, not only pulled off a catch but made a full-length dive to his wrong side to claim a screamer, dismissing Shreyas Iyer. This easily has to be the best catch of the tournament as the ball was dying low onto his left. Sandeep Sharma was in a different zone altogether that day as he claimed a four-wicket haul to help his side dismiss Daredevils for 67, in a must-win encounter. #7 Jaydev Unadkat Jaydev Unadkat. (Photo Source: Twitter) Sandeep Sharma’s brilliance was only overshadowed by the efforts of Jaydev Unadkat in the Finals. Jaydev Unadkat used his guile to bowl an off-cutter to Simmons. The Trinidadian, in an attempt to play towards mid-wicket, only managed to find the leading edge of his bat. Unadkat, in his follow-through, going towards fine leg, changed his entire momentum and direction to grab hold of the ball to his left in front of the umpire. The ball managed to stick in between his fingers and a jubilant Unadkat threw the ball in joy to complete the catch. #8 Corey Anderson Corey Anderson. (Photo Source: Twitter) To talk about fielding and catches and not include Kiwis in the countdown is almost unheard of. Dinesh Karthik was threatening to post a total well beyond the reach of the Daredevils with his 61 off 30 balls. Corey Anderson plucked yet another beauty off the bowling of Pat Cummins to dismiss the in-form Karthik. The ball lobbed past Anderson’s head but the Canterburian leaped up in the air, grabbed the ball one-handed and nonchalantly kicked the ball away to display his swagger. Sunil Gavaskar was quick to describe the whole event as ‘jaw-dropping’, even though the IPL has seen some the most incredible catches. #9 Martin Guptill Martin Guptill. (Photo Source: Twitter) Martin Guptill made a long-lasting impact this season, if not with the bat but definitely on the field. In yet another must-win encounter for Kings XI Punjab against Mumbai Indians. Lendl Simmons was going great guns as he tried to smash a full-toss from Maxwell over long-on. But Guptill used his reach to pluck one from mid-air, just in front of the ropes to shock everyone in the stadium and beyond.
