New Zealand leg-spinner Ish Sodhi made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut for Rajasthan Royals against his Sunrisers Hyderabad led by his national team captain Kane Williamson. Sodhi got a surprise call to join Rajasthan Royals side when another SRH recruit Afghanistan’s Zahir Khan got injured and was ruled out of the tournament.

On his debut, Sodhi returned with a figure of 1/25 in the 3 overs that he bowled. However, he did not get another opportunity to play as 27-year-old D’Arcy Short replaced him as the overseas in the team. The leg-spinner shared his experience and what was his reaction when he got the surprise call to join the Royals.

It’s been a surreal experience in the IPL

The 25-year old Kiwi spinner said that he was just settling in the off-season having featured in the intriguing Test against England, where he hit a match-saving half-century for his side. Sodhi said that he was just wondering how he will work on his game and improve his skills when he got the call. Sodhi while speaking to the TOI suggested that playing against his national skipper has been a great experience.

“It’s been a blur for me so far, playing against my national captain (Kane Williamson), it’s been a surreal experience so far,” he said.

Notably, the Royals are mentored by legendary Australia leg-spinner Shane Warne who had led the side in the inaugural season of the tournament. Sodhi said that Warne is the greatest leg-spinner who has played the game and added that he is trying to pick the brains of the Aussie legend. He further added that it’s been a great opportunity for him to be working with someone like Warne.

The Royals are placed at number 7 in the points table just above Mumbai Indians. The Ludhiana-born New Zealand player would be hoping to get another opportunity with which he can help the side qualify for the playoffs.
