For all that he has contributed to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Robin Uthappa was a deserving candidate to be RTMed. He has been the vital cog of their set-up for a long time now and the franchise didn’t hesitate spending Rs 6.4 Crore on him. But somehow the swashbuckling batsman couldn’t reap rich rewards last season. May be the age (33) is catching up with him now but it was baffling to see a player like him not setting the stage on fire on a consistent basis.

Uthappa played donned the KKR jersey in all the matches they played last season but he could only cross the 50-run mark only once. While he was consistently scoring 30s, the right-handed batsman just failed to get going when it mattered the most. With Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine opening, Uthappa had to give up his opening slot and looked a bit uncomfortable.

At the moment, he has undergone a surgery on his right leg and is recuperating from the same. He is also not playing the ongoing domestic season and might be targetting to hit the straps ahead of the next season. With less match practice, Uthappa will surely be rusty and teams might not have shown much interest in him had he been released.
