IPL 2020: Team-wise one overseas player who can be back-up captain

The T20 format requires great captaincy skills and leading a side is very tough in this format as the match-situation can change within seconds. One has to have the presence of mind to pull down the opposition and always be on top of the game. Execution of a game-plan and having a strategy for every situation is something that is essential to be the captain of a team. The IPL is considered as the most intense T20 league across the cricketing world where the captain’s decisions and plans often result in game-changing moments. In the IPL history, franchises have mostly preferred Indian players to lead their side but some players like Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist, Kumar Sangakkara, and Mahela Jayawardene were those overseas players who did wonders as captain for their franchises in IPL. Now let’s take a look at the overseas players who could lead their teams in IPL 2020: 1. Kings XI Punjab – Glenn Maxwell Glenn Maxwell. (Photo Source: Twitter) Maxwell is an Australian cricketer who currently plays ODIs and T20 games for his nation. He was first signed by Delhi Daredevils as a replacement for Travis Birt in 2012. Then in 2013 he was bought by Mumbai Indians and was the most expensive player of that season. In 2014, he was out of the Mumbai team and was bought by Kings XI Punjab that season. Maxwell is not new to captaining sides in IPL. He earlier led KXIP back in 2017. In that season KXIP finished at no. 5 on the points table with 14 points. Out of 14 games, they won seven and lost as many. His leadership and captaincy skills were reasonable in that season as he took Punjab to the 5th position as from the last two seasons, they were finishing at 8th in the points table. Maxwell is also the captain of Melbourne Stars in the BBL. In the season 2019-20, he led his team to the final and finished as runners- up in last season. He played a very crucial knock in the semis which helped the team to reach the finals. According to the management of Melbourne Stars, he has done pretty well for them so far. 2. Mumbai Indians – Kieron Pollard Kieron Pollard. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Pollard represents West Indies in international cricket and is the current captain of limited-overs formats (ODI and T20I). He has a great experience in T20s as he is the only player to play 500 T20 matches and this makes him the best option in the overseas players’ category as captain for MI. Pollard has been with MI for almost 11 seasons. He is one of the match-winning players that Mumbai Indians have always backed. In 2019, leading Mumbai Indians as its stand-in captain, Pollard played a defining inning to pull off a heist against KXIP and guided the team towards an astonishing victory. Kieron Pollard has recently led Trinbago Knight Riders in CPL 2020. Under his leadership, the team finished as the table toppers with 10 wins out of 10 matches. He guided his side to their 4th CPL title in 2020. 3. Royal Challengers Bangalore – Aaron Finch Aaron Finch. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Aaron Finch is an international player from Australia who captains the Australian cricket team in limited-overs cricket. Holding a record for two of the three highest individual scores in T20Is shows his class and understanding of the game. Surprisingly Finch has captained a team in IPL before. He led the Pune Warriors in 2013, although with little success. But there is no doubt that he is an able captain as he has done wonders for Australia in T20Is. Finch has a great experience of captaincy in T20 Leagues; he has been the skipper of Melbourne Renegades in the BBL ever since he proved his skills, sharp mind, and game sense. Under his captaincy Renegades won their first-ever BBL title in 2018-19. 4. Chennai Super Kings – Faf Du Plessis Faf du Plessis. Faf is a right-handed middle-order batsman who has played match-winning innings for the Proteas and CSK as well. He has good experience in T20s and can be a good option for captaincy. Faf has been brilliant as a player for CSK and has shown his skills in batting and fielding numerous times. He is one of the most experienced players on the side who has a great understanding of the T20 format. Du Plessis had a great calendar year of 2017 and 2018 as a captain of South Africa. The veteran led the proteas to no. 2 positions in 2017 and showed similar success in ODIs and T20Is. 5. Kolkata Knight Riders – Eoin Morgan Eoin Morgan (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Eoin Morgan is an Irish born cricketer who captains the England cricket team in the limited-overs format. It was under his captaincy that England won their first-ever ICC World Cup trophy in 2019. Over the past few years, he has completely transformed England’s limited overs sides. He changed England cricket from a team that lost to Bangladesh in the 2015 ICC World Cup to a team that played ICC T20 World Cup Final in 2016. This is an evident example of his skills to lead a side with all his strength. Morgan has proved himself as a capable leader in the past few years. Thus he is a great option for the franchise to be an overseas captain who could lead his side from the front and can give fantastic results. 6. Sunrisers Hyderabad – Kane Williamson Kane Williamson. (Photo: IANS) Kane Williamson is an international cricketer who plays for the New Zealand cricket team and leads it in all three formats. He made his full-time captaincy debut in T20 World Cup 2016. Moreover, he led his team to ICC World Cup 2019 final and won the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award. He has been playing in IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad since 2015. Ever since then, he has played numerous match-winning innings for SRH. In 2018 he was named the captain of SRH replacing David Warner. In that season SRH played the final with CSK but ended up on the losing side. Leading the Kiwis to the 2019 World Cup final and SRH to the 2018 IPL final show his captaincy skills and competency as compared to the other skippers in the IPL. He has a fantastic game sense which allows him to rule over the opposite side most of the time. 7. Rajasthan Royals – Jos Buttler Jos Buttler. (Photo: Twitter) Jos Buttler is an international cricketer, who has been a success story in the England cricket team in the limited-overs formats. He has also served as vice-captain of England in the 2019 ICC World Cup. In IPL he played for Mumbai Indians in the year 2016 and 2017. In 2018 he was bought by Rajasthan Royals and had a good season with great performances. He struggled to bat in the middle order but when he was promoted to open the innings, he showed his class and did wonders. This even helped him to open for his nation and he didn’t flatter to deceive. Having the capability to play all around the field and skill to build innings makes him the best option for the franchise to go with as a new overseas captain. He has a good game sense which allows him to play his innings accordingly. 8. Delhi Capitals – Marcus Stoinis Marcus Stoinis celebrates his fifty. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Marcus Stoinis is an Australian player who plays international cricket in the limited-overs format. He is an all-rounder who is having a great calendar year this time. He has portrayed himself as a great T20 all-rounder and has given several match-winning performances in the last 2 -3 years. He was first signed by Delhi Daredevils in 2015 and in 2016 he was bought by KXIP. In 2016 he achieved his career-best T20 figures for KXIP against MI, which was 4/15 in 4 overs. Currently, he is in Delhi Capitals and has proved himself again in the 2020 IPL. Stoinis doesn’t have much experience as a captain, but with his great cricketing skills, he could be the best option to go for captaincy as far as an overseas leader is concerned. He is a player who can prove his leading skills if given a chance once.
