IPL 2022: 5 deserving players who did not get a single game

In a tournament like the Indian Premier League (IPL), there is cut-throat competition to find a place in the squad. Some players make full use of their opportunity to contribute to the team, while some fail and get dropped as well. With T20 serving as a game of momentum, the team management does not look to tinker often with their combinations. In the 2022 season, most of the teams constituted experienced foreign players and hence, there were not enough chances for others to get into the team. On the other hand, a few talented Indian players also could not get their due chances as they could not get into the scheme of things. Here are 5 deserving players who didn’t get to play even a single game: 1. Mohammad Nabi Mohammad Nabi. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The all-rounder of the Afghanistan team has been a part of almost all the franchise leagues in his career. He has contributed in both departments of the game to help his respective sides to do well in different tournaments. He had some decent outings in the 2022 editions of the Big Bash League (BBL) and Pakistan Super League (PSL). KKR availed his services in the IPL 2022 mega auction for a base price of INR 1 crore. However, the Afghan national could not get any opportunity due to the presence of retained all-rounders Andre Russell and Sunil Narine. With 4996 runs and 302 wickets in T20s, Nabi is a proven performer in the shortest format of the game and might have helped KKR to seal the playoffs stage. His abilities have also been under-rated in the tournament as he has featured in only 17 matches since the 2017 edition. He has picked up a total of 13 wickets and garnered 180 runs in his career. Nabi last featured for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2021 against Mumbai Indians (MI). 2. Lungi Ngidi Lungi Ngidi during the practice session. (Photo Source: Twitter) Lungi Ngidi is a permanent member of the South African Test team. He was one of the key bowlers to help Proteas win their home ODI and Test series against India earlier this year. Ngidi has done well for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the last three editions. In 14 appearances, Ngidi has scalped 25 wickets at an economy of 8.30. In the 2018 edition, the pacer picked up 11 wickets and was one of the reasons for the team to clinch their third title. He played three matches in the 2021 edition and picked up five wickets. Delhi Capitals (DC) snapped Ngidi in the 2022 auction at his base price of INR 50 lakh. With the Capitals already having talented pacers in Mustafizur Rahman and Anrich Nortje, he could not represent the team in this edition. If given a chance next year, he would look to do well for the Capitals and take the team to playoffs. 3. Ishan Porel Ishan Porel. He has been a part of the bilateral India A tours and has been a net bowler for the Indian senior team as well. Although Ishan Porel has been impressive across all the formats, he has particularly done well to take 30 wickets in 22 T20 appearances at an economy of 6.71. Porel has been with the Punjab Kings (PBKS) for the last three editions. In the 2022 auction, the franchise bought him for an amount of INR 25 lakh. Under KL Rahul’s leadership in 2021, the Bengal pacer made his IPL debut and finished with figures of 1/39 against Rajasthan Royals (RR). This season, PBKS had enough pace bowling options like Sandeep Sharma, Kagiso Rabada, Arshdeep Singh and Vaibhav Arora, which was the reason behind Porel not getting any chances despite his proven performances in the domestic circuit. 4. Benny Howell Benny Howell. (Photo by Harry Trump/Getty Images) The English all-rounder Benny Howell has been featuring in domestic cricket since 2010. His form with the Gloucestershire team helped him to get an IPL deal with PBKS this season. Howell scored 246 runs at a strike rate of 142.19 and provided late flourishes to his team in the Blast 2021. He was also the leading wicket-taker with 15 scalps at an economy of 8.10 in the tournament. However, Howell could not feature for the Punjab Kings in IPL 2022. With the all-rounders like Liam Livingstone, Odean Smith, and Rishi Dhawan, the team did not try enough players and the 33-year-old was devoid of his chances. In his first knock after the culmination of the IPL, he scored 46 off 20 and took a wicket as well against Middlesex in the ongoing Blast. The talented all-rounder would look to continue his fine performances to have a strong claim next year. 5. Jason Behrendorff Jason Behrendorff is a good and skilful bowler. Jason Behrendorff has been a quality pacer in the powerplay as well as death overs. His ability to swing the new ball has been quite handy for Perth Scorchers in the last few editions of the Big Bash League (BBL). In 13 matches of the 2021-22 BBL, Behrendorff scalped 16 wickets at an economy of 7.32 and played a key role to help Scorchers win the title. Therefore, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) picked him up in the 2022 auction for a base price of INR 75 lakh. However, the 32-year-old did not play in any of the games in the entire season as the overseas bowling spots were filled by the likes of Josh Hazlewood and Wanindu Hasaranga.
