The upcoming four months will witness the teams experimenting a lot to find their World Cup combination. The mega event is set to be played in England from May 30 to July 14 this year. While India and Australia are involved in a three-match ODI series, Pakistan and South Africa will be locking horns from January 19 in five matches. The deadline for the World Cup squad to be announced is April 23 and the former Australian cricketer Jason Gillespie has picked the favourites to lift the title.

According to the coach of the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League (BBL), India and the hosts England are top contenders for the coveted title. He singled out the Men in Blue’s bowling attack and is extremely impressed with the way Jasprit Bumrah has shaped up in the last couple of years.

Jason Gillespie pointed out how Indian bowling attack is still faring well despite Bumrah’s absence. At 281/5, Australi looked set to post a total in excess of 320 in Adelaide only for Bhunveshwar Kumar to pull the things back in the last three overs. The hosts could add only 17 runs and lost four wickets to end up on 298/9 eventually.

Indian attack is well balanced

“I think the Indian attack is well balanced. Bumrah has been rested for obvious reason but their attack is still quite good. Everyone offers different things, and you add Bumrah to it, so they are well placed to mount a challenge for the World Cup. I think England are the obvious favourites, but India won’t be far behind,” the former Australian speedster was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

Gillespie was in awe of Bumrah who has been rested after an exceptional Test series and tried to dissect his bowling action. “His action does stand out. It is a braced front leg, delayed bowling arm action. It gets you to the crease quickly and delivers that sling shot. It is what generates his pace,” he further added.

Moreover, Gillespie also felt that weak-looking Australia can still give their best shot at the World Cup and the youngsters will have to step up for that to happen.
