Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni came under strong criticism at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Wednesday for showing aggression. He stormed onto the field from the dugout to challenge one of the umpires for making a flip-flop over calling a no-ball in the final over of the CSK’s chase of the target of 152 against Rajasthan Royals (RR). Though the CSK eventually won the thriller, thanks to a last-ball six by Mitchell Santner, the conduct of ‘captain cool’ did not go down well with many. He was even accused of setting a bad precedent.

Among those who reacted to the incident directly or indirectly was Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) coach Mike Hesson who opined that a coach or captain should “make a clear decision instead of making an emotive one”. Hesson, the New Zealander who was speaking to the media ahead of the clash between the Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Mohali on Saturday, said: “If you rush in, at the heat of the moment, sometimes, your thinking can be a little bit flawed. So, I think, whoever it is, a coach or a captain, ideally if you are able to buy yourself a bit of time, you can often make a better decision.”

Hesson’s own captain came under fire for ‘Mankading’ act

The captain of Hesson’s own team, Ravichandran Ashwin, also came under the scanner last month when the off-break bowler chose to ‘Mankad’ Jos Buttler in a game against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur. The Kings won the game on that occasion but Ashwin lost many friends for allegedly violating the spirit of the gentleman’s game.

No team has won a match in the tournament batting first since April 6 and that has made the toss a crucial factor now, thanks to dew which is making it challenging for sides bowling second. But Hesson feels the only solution lies in bowling better with the wet ball. “All sides are finding it difficult to do, at all venues around the place,” he said.
