MSK Prasad has his say on Ashwin-Jadeja's future in limited-overs cricket
The tough competition among the players is surely good for Indian cricket.
India’s wrist-spinners are performing exceptionally well for the side in both the limited overs formats. The likes of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav have grasped the opportunity presented to them by the Indian selectors with both hands. Indian chief selector MSK Prasad who was watching the semifinals of the Ranji Trophy between Karnataka and Vidarbha in Kolkata’s Eden Gardens talking about India’s spinning unit said that they are just giving an opportunity to the youngsters.
When asked about the future of India’s spin twin from the Tests who have bowled brilliantly in the longest format of the game but still have found themselves out of the 50 and 20-over games, Prasad that said that the doors are always open for everyone.
He said that both Ashwin and Jadeja have done so much for the country that they can always get in the team. Interestingly both Ashwin and Jadeja has been in the top 10 Test bowling ranking for some time now. Jadeja ranks at 3 while Ashwin is at number 4 in the ICC Test bowling rankings.
Ravichandran Ashwin averages around 32 in 111 ODI games while in T20s his numbers get better as the 31-year-old averages around 22. Jadeja too possesses similar stats as his counterpart from Tests. Jadeja averages around 35 in the 50-over format while in T20 he averages around 31 with the ball.
We will see where they stand
Prasad said that the youngsters have performed well in the given opportunities and it is correct to give them an extended run in both the formats. He said to Indian Express, “It makes more sense to give them an extended rope and try them against the best of the opponents and see where they stand.”
Prasad said that Indian seamers have been brilliant in the recent past and they have allowed the selectors to work on the bench-strength of the spin units. The good seam attack has helped the selectors give an extended run to the youngsters in the spin department.
