Cricket in Afghanistan has grown leaps and bounds over the last one decade. The political scenario in the country isn’t something pleasant as the Taliban leaves no stone unturned in not letting the sport take place in the nation. However, despite the hurdles, they have moved on and enthralled the cricket world. Moreover, they have also produced a number of prodigious talents, young Rashid Khan is one of them.

Rashid is 19-years old and has already taken giant strides into the sport. He is ranked number one in T20Is and the tweaker has stamped his authority even in domestic T20 leagues around the globe. The cricketer recently had the privilege of playing in Afghanistan’s maiden Test versus India in Bangalore.

Rashid’s early difficulties

All the success he has at his feet now has come after a lot of struggle. He didn’t quite have an easy going childhood and had to face opposition from even his family when he wanted to play cricket.

“When I wanted to play cricket, my mother and father did not allow me to play, some of my siblings did not allow either. We are both Pathan who work hard with their elders and parents in fields and they go through many difficulties throughout their life so their hands become hard and strong. I was an intelligent student at school and wanted to become a doctor. I would get 5th position in class,” Rashid told to Cricbuzz.

Rashid played the 2018 IPL for the Sunrisers Hyderabad and was one of their gun bowlers with 21 wickets from 17 matches. Meanwhile, he also had the opportunity to hone his skills under the tutelage of the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan during the T20 event in India.

“I asked spin bowling coach Muralitharan during the IPL to teach the skill of slow bowling but he told me that I have a natural talent and I don’t need to be trained,” he stated.

The task for Rashid now is to keep working on his skills and to ensure the batsmen don’t decipher his mystery anytime soon.
